Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: Transparency slides of Australia selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows views of Sydney. They include one taken from the top of the MLC Building; the outer harbour Heads from the ferry; The Gap; Manly Beach; Circular Quay; the Custom House; Sydney Harbour Bridge; Captain Cook Statue, the War Memorial and the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park; a distant view of St Mary's Basilica; a view of streets from the Town Hall showing the Town Hall Lounge and Waltons-Sears building; the Sydney Botanical Gardens; Wynyard Park; the old New South Wales Parliament House; and Bondi Beach. These are followed by two images relating to the Camden Estate Rotolactor showing a group of visitors to the building and cows in a yard waiting to go into the "Rotolactor" rotary milking shed. It was the 2nd facility of its kind in the world, enabling larger-scale mechanisation of commercial dairy farming, opened in 1952, ceasing operation in 1972. The slides are not filed in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of Australian images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
