Date: 1885
By: Barraud, William Francis, 1850-1926
Reference: D-037-002
Description: Shows a suspension bridge over a stream, in a valley with bush and snowy mountains in the background. The posts at the ends of the bridge are built on top of supports consisting of successive layers of cut logs, each layer placed at 90 degrees to the layer below. The span is composed of strung wires or ropes, with wooden or metal arches placed at regular intervals across the span. On the far bank is a single storey hut with a verandah and a smoking chimney. The title is taken from the auctioneer's catalogue. The hut shown may not be Glade House, but may be a precursor in the same area. Glade House was built by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts, which took over guiding in the area after 1903. The design of the end supports of the bridge is the same as that of the suspension bridge photographed at 1/2-180516-G, known to be near Glade House. If this scene is located near Glade House, the river is the Clinton River. The Milford Track was not in existence in 1885, the date on this drawing. Other Titles - Lake Te Anau Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 556 x 470 mm Processing information: Deframed by the Library
