Description: Photographs from the Rotorua Branch of the Native Forest Action Council taken circa 1970s-1980s by unidentified photographers. Mainly images of native forests and rimu and beech logging schemes in Westland and the surrounding area. Identified locations and geographical features include Maruia, Okarito, Waikukupa, Paparoa Range, Mount Tasman, Frans Josef Glacier, and Tasman Sea. Many images show the destruction of environment caused by logging. Other images include forests that are scheduled for logging, Red Crowned Parakeets [Red-Fronted Parakeet], and the area proposed for an extension to Westland National Park. Many of the photographs are mounted and numbered for display and include information about the locations photographed, the logging scheme, and possible effects. Two boards of photographs relate to (North Island?) forests in Waipara Valley, Horohoro, and Whirinaki. These have drawings and slogans on the reverse of the photo board regarding a campaign to stop logging and save the habitats of herons. Description: Lawrence Curreen born 1919 and family moved to Great Barrier Island in 1922. Recalls having half time schooling at Awana and half time at Whangapara. Describes school, transport, store, bush camps, lack of metalled roads, fertiliser and clearing of land. Recalls service with Air Force in the Pacific during World War II, losing his hearing while flying and need for a hearing aid. Talks about advantages of air-field on the island, enabling people to get to Auckland for medical treatment in emergencies and describes various work-related accidents over the years.
