Description: Interview with David John (Dave) Foster, born Auckland, 3 January 1924. Mentions his mother Dorothy Gwendolyn emigrated from London and his father Walter Keith came from Lancashire via Australia. Mentions his father and grandfather Joseph David were both bricklayers. Described how the family moved to Wellington and then Otaki where his father was the only bricklayer. Comments that there was not enough work and he bought a fishing boat for additional income. Describes leaving school after Proficiency and working as a labourer for his father before taking an apprenticeship as a carpenter/joiner. Mentions serving overseas in Egypt and Italy during World War II. Refers to finishing his apprentiship after returning home, meeting his wife Shirley Beryl Turner, and building their house at Otaki. Mentions working as a foreman for Fletchers, building houses in Otaki later, and leaving the building trade during a recession. Discusses becoming a market gardener and mentions crops he grew, fertilizers, pest control and problems from lack of precautions taken when mixing and using sprays. Comments on family members working in the garden. Refers to transport of produce by truck to Wellington and by rail to Auckland. Discusses the Otaki District Commercial Gardeners Society, and buying fertilizers, sprays, equipment and packaging from it's store. Description: Two cranes on the Bank of New Zealand site, Willis Street, Wellington, photographed by Evening Post staff photographer Nigel Tod 7 November 1974. The cranes have a jib length of 130 ft and a lifting capacity of 25 tons and 18 tons, respectively. They are of the internal climbing type - as the building grows the cranes will move upwards under their own power, eventually climbing through the top to sit on the roof. They are the largest of their type to be used in New Zealand by the contractores Civil and Civic. (Info from Evening Post caption). Description: The collection comprises relatively recent records of the two unions, which at the time of accession had just merged into one new union, the Amalgamated Workers' Union of New Zealand. Most of the material is from the New Zealand Workers' Union, and includes mainly box files on various subjects, with some conference papers, photographs, financial papers etc. Among other things the collection provides a good record of union activity on various large construction sites around New Zealand. Included also are some deposited records of Standard Press Ltd; New Zealand Tobacco Products Employees Union; New Zealand Federated Labourers' Association; and the New Zealand Rubber Workers' Union. Title supplied by Library. See previous accession of New Zealand Workers' Union material (88-203). The Amalgamated Workers' Union New Zealand was formed in 1991 from the New Zealand Labourer's Union and the New Zealand Workers Union. Quantity: 128 box(es). 5 volume(s). 41 Linear Metres.
