Description: Collection comprises two sets of negatives: One set of 17 images relates to Nicholas Reid and his family. Taken at Maoribank, Upper Hutt, circa 1910 by unidentified photographer(s). Images chiefly show the Reid family home, land Nicholas Reid and family members in the garden. Also includes outdoors scenes showing: the Hutt River, two men and a dog rowing on the Hutt River, men stacking hay on a cart, family members sitting in a horse and trap, a ramschackle hut [whare?] at Maoribank [possibly the Haukaretu Maori settlement], and a line of World War One cavalry cantering along a country road. One set of 36 images shows New Zealand writer Barry Crump and his family at their residence at Waihi. Taken by David Hancock on 11 May 1973. Includes images of a house exterior, Crump chopping wood, and a group in a living room that comprises Crump, a woman [possibly his third wife Vanda Hill], two children, and an unidentified man. The film negatives taken circa 1910 are unusual because film was not widely used in New Zealand at that time. List of names for Reid family members written by donor stored in Photographic Archive back file. Bibliography - the images related to the Reid family have been published online on the 'Classorama' website at Title supplied by Library. Source of descriptive information - the donor. His enclosure for the 35mm negatives was labelled '474 Crump at Waihi 11/5/73'. See Upper Hutt City Library reference 178 'CD of photos of Reid family at Maoribank, early 1900s'. Arrangement: Negatives are held at 35mm-101293 to 35mm-101298 (Crump), and at 1/2-237286 to 1/2-237303 (Reid). David Hanock is the great grandson of businessman Nicholas Reid who had a house at Maoribank, Upper Hutt which he used for weekends in the early 1900s. David Hanock is a photographer, and took photographs of Barry Crump and his family in 1973. David's mother was the grand-daughter of Nicholas Reid. She, later, with her husband, purchased the Reid's house in the early 1950s, and the donor lived there as a child. Exact connection with Crump is unknown. Description: Jean Taylor was born in Upper Hutt in 1938. Describes the Upper Hutt church, now the Wesley Centre. Mentions that it was transported in two parts from Whiteman's Valley to its current site. Refers to the road over Mangaroa Hill used for logging purposes, the route of the railway line, McLaren Street houses which were part of the timber milling project, the development of sections in that area. Mentions delivering Crosslink magazine and the monthly church paper. Explains what the transition to a co-operating parish was like, names the Presbyterian worship centres of St. Andrew's, Iona, Brown Owl. Gives details of the early history of the Wellington region from the 1820s including Maori migrations, battles, gardens, and allocation of land plots. Description: Collection comprises papers originating from Barbara Hoskins's maternal (Nimmo) and paternal (Anton) families, and from her own career and personal life. Mainly comprises papers and ephemera belonging to her father Sidney James Anton and mother Sybil Edith Anton (nee Nimmo); notably 1920s dance cards, World War One soldier's diary and wallet, All Black, Springbok and British Isles tour itinerary cards. Includes material relating to her aunt Kathleen Frances Viard Nimmo, her uncle William Henry (Bill) Nimmo, her grandmother Edith Agnes Nimmo (nee Fitzgerald). Also includes Barbara Hoskins's work books and diaries for Owhiro Bay School and Island Bay School in late 1970s to early 1980s, and ephemera items related to the religious and social etiquette for her birthdays, engagement and marriage events circa early 1950s. Barbara Hoskins lived in Island Bay, Wellington, taught at Island Bay School between 1970 and 1981, and was involved in the local St Francis de Sales church. She is a member of the Wellington Southern Bays Historical Society and has written articles on the social history of Island Bay and the 1918 influenza epidemic. Her maternal family the Nimmo family lived at Standen Street, Karori from 1907, and is related to the Philps family who emigrated in 1841. Her mother Sybil Edith worked as a telegraphist as did her aunt Kathleen Frances Viard Nimmo. Her father Sidney James Anton served in New Zealand Field Artillery on the Western Front during World War One. He travelled on the transport ship HMNZT No.4.
