Like water on a duck's back, Kiwi is a raincoat for your shoes. No. 46 [1950s?]

Date: 1945 - 1959

Reference: Eph-C-CLEANING-1950s-01

Description: Display card advertising the protective qualities of Kiwi shoe polish shows an illustration of two ducks flying, and at lower right a shiny black leather shoe showing trace droplets of water. The ducks may be of the species American wood duck, found in North America. The card shows an American wood duck. Therefore it is likely this card was not for the New Zealand market. It is of interest partly because of the brand name of the shoe polish. "The polish was developed in Australia by William Ramsay who named it Kiwi after the flightless bird endemic to New Zealand, the home country of his wife, Annie Elizabeth Meek Ramsay. Its success in Australia expanded overseas when it was adopted by both the British and American armies in World War I. Previously owned by the Sara Lee Corporation since 1984, it was sold in 2011 to S. C. Johnson. It is the dominant shoe polish in some countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, where it has about two-thirds of the market". ((Information from Wikipedia, 23 April 2016) Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph on rigid card, 356 x 231 mm. Provenance: Purchased from a private vendor in 2016.
