Description: Dame Patricia Bergquist was born in Devonport in 1933. Recalls her childhood holidays spent on Rangitoto Island where she discovered an interest in marine biology. Traces this interest through her schooling and university study and talks about how she came to specialise in sponge taxonomy. Comments on the fact that she was the only person in the Southern Hemisphere working in this area initially and mentions collaboration with a Yale professor. Notes that other than short spells overseas she has worked at the University of Auckland, Where she is currently Professor of Zoology and Assistant Vice-Chancellor. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society (New Zealand), recipient of the Hector Medal and was awarded her DBE in 1994.
