From: Wildlife Service oral history project
By: Merton, Donald Vincent, 1939-2011
Reference: OHInt-0988-02
Description: Interview with Don Merton, born in Devonport in 1939. Recalls growing up at Gisborne, liking the outdoors and becoming interested in endangered species when he was 12. Mentions fostering goldfinch chicks with his grandmother's male canary. Talks about joining the Wildlife Service throught the trainee scheme, and the few women in the Service then. Mentions trout fisheries and their impact on blue duck numbers. Talks about the devastating effects of rats on offshore islands, and the attitudes of early managers who were trained overseas and did not support intervention. Refers to the work of Brian Bell in saving saddlebacks by moving them in 1964, and to the genetic problems in very small populations. Talks about a Churchill Fellowship in 1973 which was a major event in his early career, and the contacts he developed. Refers to advocating a Threatened Species Unit but it not happening until the Department of Conservation (DOC) was created. Mentions working with Ian Atkinson, Tony Druce, Brian Bell and John Campbell. Refers to the importance of volunteers in assisting with threatened species work. Comments on the rescue of black robins and the need to restore the habitat on Pitt Island if they are to survive. Mentions how budgets cuts for conservation threaten work on species such as kakapo as they are all on offshore islands, stoats can swim, and bait stations are needed in perpetuity. Comments on the (political) interest in work with endangered species such as kakapo and black robin but interest in biodiversity slipping badly within DOC. Refers to biosecurity at the border "leaking". Talks about changes he has seen on Raoul Island over his career, the need for vigilance against the reintroduction of rats, and the reintroduction of analogue species. Refers to spending 48 years doing hands on work in the field, mainly at a time when it had a low status, and retiring as an Honorary Research Associate for DOC, assisting as a mentor. Reflects that conservation was his life, hobby and job and he is also interested in photography. Mentions overseas projects he has assisted with including in Mauritius, the Seychelles, Fauklands and Outer Hebrides. Comments on the book 'Don Merton : the man who saved the black robin' (2007). Reflects that he tried to put himself into the niche of a bird in his work and that birds have land rights.
