Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Album of photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon, including many contacts from 35 mm film, chiefly related to Wellington Camera Club outings. Others relating to photographic outings relate to the Photographic Society of New Zealand, Palmerston North regional meetings in October and November 1956. Many of the photographs show his interest in different lights and shapes, and he often gives details of lenses and filters used. Examples are winter light and shade at the Massey Memorial, a ploughed field near Palmerston North, the new entrance foyer and stairs when the Easterfield Science Block opened at Victoria University of Wellington in June 1959, still life images, flowers, cloud formations, ripples on sand, and light and shade along the Wellington Wharves. Description: Photographs of leaders of the Girl Guide Association, Girl Guides, Brownies and Rangers, and various activities throughout New Zealand. The first pages show the move from old headquarter buildings in Hastings to new buildings in Christchurch, in September 1961. They include the transfer of equipment by truck and by air freight, and views of different aspects of the new premises. Later views show visiting Girl Guide leaders attending conferences and training courses; ceremonial occasions attended by Lord Cobham in 1962, and by Sir Bernard and Lady Fergusson. Lady Fergusson was the Dominion President during their term in New Zealand. One section of the album shows activities of Girl Guides and Brownies in the Cook Islands, and also in Western Samoa. A number of the camps were attended by Girl Guides from Pacific countries, with many of the Guides named in the album. Various activities undertaken by the Guides include the sale of Girl Guide biscuits, ANZAC Day commemorations, Thinking Day ceremonies, rallies, and the awards of special badges. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Description: Account of riding holiday taken by Phyllis Long and Sylvia Lysaght on horses Ngaio and Ladybird. Describes route from Punarima via Mokoia, Hawera, Ngaere, Stratford, Te Whera, Pohukura, Whangamomona, Ohura, to near Aria. Then by car to Te Kuiti and on to Waitomo Caves. Return journey by foot to Te Kuiti and back to Aria by car. Route on horseback continues with the two women travelling down the Awakino River to the sea and then back to Punarima via Tongaporutu, White Cliffs, Urenui, and New Plymouth. Account describes the people they meet and places they stayed along the way. Camping spots, bush, the condition of the horses (including Ngaio almost drowning), rats, mosquitos, bathing, and food (including picnics). Also description of Waitomo Caves. People of note include: Mr Henry and Mrs Ida Barwick (of near Te Wera): the Good family (also of near Te Wera) who rode through the Tangarakai Gorge with them; and the Ritchie family (including Thomas, Mary, and John) of Aria, formerly of the Chatham Islands, where they left their horses when they travelled on to Waitomo. Description: Photograph album, mainly of holidays, compiled by Phyllis Long during her time in New Zealand, 1923 to 1926. Some photographs are likely taken by Long but other photographers are unidentified. Album features horse treks and horse riding. Two treks with Sylvia Lysaght are covered; one in Taranaki and Waikato Regions in January-February 1925, and the other from Wanganui to Lake Taupo, December 1925-January 1926. Includes images of Long and Lysaght on their horses Ngaio and Ladybird, places they stayed (camp sites, houses, huts), people they stayed with, and scenic images (bush, mountains, rivers, farmland, and coast). Images from the second trek feature the party of colleagues and friends Long and Lysaght joined (including Eric Tyndale-Biscoe and [Hugh Austin?]) and the Lake Taupo site at which they camped and as well as an unidentified Maori whanau with whom the duo stayed on their return journey. Tramping and mountaineering trips also feature in the album. One set shows a holiday to the Central Plateau, with the party staying in a hut at Whakapapa Village. Photographs include excursions to the summit of Mount Ruapehu, Tama Lakes, Whakapapa Falls, and Taranaki Falls as well as some skiing images. Another set of images is taken on a trip to the Taranaki Region. Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki) features with Long and a female companion pictured on the summit. There are also a number of images of Dawson Falls, including some swimming and bush scenes, and scenic images of the mountain and surrounding area, with Doreen Ross pictured in one image. Other places visited by Long include Wanganui and at a farm with an unidentified family [Ross or Lysaght?]. Photographs from the farm show various people (including children), a chicken coop, lambs being fed, dogs, and horses. Another set of photographs show a motoring, camping, and picnicking excursions in a Model TT Ford covered truck. In addition to Tyndale-Biscoe, Frank and Elizabeth McGrath and their children Mary, Joan, [and Hugh?] appear in numerous photographs. McGrath family images include informal as well as a set of formal studio portraits of both groups and individual members. The family in captured motoring, in beach scenes [Kai Iwi camping trip?], on horseback, riding bikes, reading, and at a Mokoia farmhouse, with Long and Tyndale-Biscoe often appearing in photographs with them. Other people that feature include Long's teaching colleagues and friends from Nga Tawa and Wanganui Collegiate schools. Those identified in captions include Tyndale-Biscoe, "Shrimp", Else Rowe , Aubrey Fullerton-Smith, Conrad, Mr Latham, Mr [Cr]opper?, Mr [F.H.?] Latham, Mr Izard, Doreen Ross, and Roy Ross. Album also includes a studio portrait of Phyllis Tyndale-Biscoe in 1927. There are a number of images of Tyndale-Biscoe with his motorcycle. Commercial postcards feature photographs of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki) as well as Waitomo Caves limestone formations, Wanganui River, and Wanganui Collegiate School. Three postcards are addressed to members of Long's family in England (and were sent). Another two postcards were sent to Long by Tyndale-Biscoe and "Himself" [Frank McGrath?]. Also a note from Hugh [McGrath?] to Long sent while she was travelling home to England. Larger mounted print of image of Long's horse Ngaio at PAColl-10463. Two treks and other excursions are described in depth in Long's diaries and letters to her parents. Description: Illustrated diary of Hill's travels through the South Island in the summer of 1949-1950. The diary is a detailed and engaging account of Hill's travels with colleagues from Iona College. They leave Havelock North journeying to the Milford Sounds and six weeks camping in the South Island. Their exercusions take them to Dunedin, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Homer Tunnel, Eglington Valley, Lake Manapouri, Bluff, Stewart Island, Invercargill, Queenstown, Cromwell, Lake Wanaka, Hamner Springs, Buller Gorge, Nelson, Malborough Sounds, Picton, Wellington and other tourist destinations. Black and white photographs have been inserted into the diary and include images from their tramp over the Milford Track. Illustrations depict local flora and sketches of the travelling party.
