Description: Photographs taken and collected by Arthur John Sawyer. Some of the photographs were taken during the Mawson Expedition 1911-1913 on Macquarie Island. These include radio telegraph aparatus, seals, and a view of the landscape. Other images include a group of soldiers on Nauru, unidentified men, women, and children, and some of the crowd at the Auckland-Wellington rep match 1913. The negatives record places in England and Ireland, ca 1898. They include Henley, Chester, countryside, Waterford, Tranmore, Dublin, and Roscrea. Two are views of a procession associated with Charles Stewart Parnell. Biographical information about Mr Sawyer in in clippings from Poverty Bay Herald, 19 Jan 1932 (obituary); also Dominion 26 Feb 1930, and Dubbo Liberal 9 Dec 1927. He was born in Gisborne, and was a cousin of Shackleton's. Letters in scrapbook show Sawyer donated his journal and resume of his radio experiences on Macquarie Island to the Mitchell Library, 1924 (Email from Mitchell Library 11 May 2005 notes `Mitchell Library holds Sawyer's diary, 1911-1916 together with several pages of notes re his time on Macquarie Island written in 1924. The diaries and notes are located at MLMSS 383. Provenance: Mr Newlands was given this collection by Mrs Green when helping to clear deceased estate of Mr John Green some time ago.
