Bibby family : Records of Bibby's Store

Description: Grocery books and an order ledger for Bibby's Store. Volumes supply customer details including name, date, items ordered and purchase prices. Some pages are annotated with sketches, doodles and additional customer information. Source of title - Supplied by Library Bibby's Store was founded by Edward Bibby and Mary Ann Bibby (nee Woodhouse) in Waipawa on the 24th July 1862. The store was located at the junction of Hampden Road and the main road north to Napier, on the banks of the Waipawa River. In the early 1880s the old building was moved across the road on skids, Edward Bibby erected a new store on the original site. Mary Bibby also ran a mail-order business from the store. The Bibby's had eight children, many of whom worked alongside them in the family business. Quantity: 33 volume(s). 1.50 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Mss (pencil and black ink) Provenance: Collection was salvaged by Mr H Bibby in 1997. Some volumes were beyond repair hence they were not deposited with the Library.

Family details are updated in the final section which also comprises scans of family photographs and an index. Description: Cadastral map of northern to central Hawke's Bay, including Mohaka southwards to Napier, Hastings, Waipawa and Waipukurau, as at 1859. It depicts land acquired by the government, boundaries of runs (farms) including settler names, boundaries of purchases and land ownership, Maori reserves, Maori geographical place names, pa sites, Maori tracks, roads and rivers, as indicated on the map's reference key. The Mohaka block includes names associated with land titles, namely Riddle, Anderson; pa sites including Kotokakarunga and Waipapa (beside the Mohaka) and Towitikoko and Waikare (beside the Waikare River). Several geographical places, Maori villages and streams are named. Block lot numbers 1-27 are indicated. The Ahuriri and Napier district blocks include the settler names A Alexander, JGS Garker, William Villers, Cockburn, Munro & Blair, Marshall, HB Sealy, W Ogilvy, M Hill, Dyson, William Gouper Jnr, Gray, Imrie. Named pa sites include Pia Pa Awatoto; named bush areas include Pohui and Puketitiri. The Te Mata and Kidnapper blocks include the names J Chambers, G Moore, A St. Hill, Rhodes. Note on map reads 'Karinema's [Karenema's] reserve under offer' (Havelock North area). Pa site indicated at Marae Totora (Maraetotora) and north and south of Whakatu, Heretaunga, along the Ngaruroro River. Waimarama block is noted as 'in treaty for'. Waimarama and Arana blocks include the names W Gouper, J Montieth; Hapuku's block Chapman, Hargrove and Gouper, HS Tiffen, ES Gurling, E Collins. Description: News item from Napier announcing an incident in Poverty Bay, four miles from Napier, involving Te Kooti and his men, and Captain Reginald Biggs who had been pursuing him for some time. The ship "Success" brought surviving settlers to Napier. This preliminary report suggests that 28 Europeans and 9 friendly Maori were killed. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s) on galley proof.. Description: Sketchmaps of land near Ormondville, southern Hawkes Bay, depicting part of the boundary of the Eparaima Maori Reserve, the Tauraekaetai, the Hua Tukituki and the Ohinehua Streams, a road, bush, and fern hills. The first is a sketch of 'Paul's Native (Maori) reserve', which runs from Ormondville, over grass flats, between the Tauraekaetai and Ohinehua Streams, and includes bush on both sides of the Hua Tukituki stream, to a vertical boundary point. Across the boundary is bush designated for 'white people'. On the second map of the same area, entitled 'Reserve as it w[oul]d be available for white people', the boundary is horizontal and located two-thirds along the Tauraekaetai Stream. The area above the boundary is marked 'all good bush'; the area below is marked 'good bush available for white people'. Description: Comprises collection of Edward Stuart Bibby, including family papers and photographs as well as material collected over a life of community service and collected for historical research. Includes papers relating to the Bibby family's farm, Lunesdale, near Ongaonga; also material on Waipawa and Southern Hawkes Bay history. Includes family correspondence; farm diaries; newspaper clippings; reminiscences; farm financial records; shearing tallies; records of the Bibby Store; letters, photographs, and other documentation from E S Bibby and other family members serving in World War One; records of the Waipawa Methodist church and Waipawa School; and papers concerning Ongaonga and Waipawa history. Also includes photographs of Bibby family members and relations, family occasions, views of family properties, and views of Waipawa and Ongaonga. Title supplied by Library. Detailed scope and contents lists in item records have been taken from the donor's inventory. Arrangement: The collection was sorted and listed by the family before depositing it with the Library. Some of the material was organised by E S Bibby and Claire Bibby at the time of writing the book 'Lunesdale, a bush farm community since 1871'. Many of the papers were delivered to the Library in envelopes labelled by subject, which sometimes included both family material and the results of E S Bibby's historical research. The series relating to World War One was created in 2013 when that specific material was described in more detail. The further grouping into series was done by the archivist at the time of re-processing in 2021, with reference to the donor's original listing headings.
