Description: Pamphlet shows on one side a colourful scene of a beach, orange tree, palms and cypresses, with an outline drawing of a woman in a bikini, and the words "Italy wants to see you". The other side is in black and white and shows a skeleton in an attacking posture over a field of cemetery crosses topped with war helmets. At the lower edge are the words "But did you expect to find it like this?" New Zealand troops first fought in Italy in late 1943 and early 1944. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Pamphlet shows on one side a colourful scene of the Italian countryside on either side of the Po River, with the towns of Cremona, Brescia, Mantova, Verona, Padova, Rovigo, Modena and Ferrara, and in the right foreground a smiling young woman holding a large basket of grapes and oranges. The other side shows a black and white illustration of a laughing skeleton wading in the Po River with a wrecked bridge in the background, and soldiers on boats being attacked and killed by enemy shell fire. Artist identified as Heinz Fehling, by public feedback, in 2017. Inscriptions: Recto - F [Artist's initial] Historical notes are based on a letter from the donor, Ivan Whyle; a copy of the letter is housed with smaller propaganda posters at Eph-A-WAR-WII-Propaganda-Italy. Both the Senio and the Po Rivers were crossed in April 1945. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Offset print on two sides of pamphlet, 203 x 295 mm. Provenance: Donated by Mr Ivan Whyle, of Auckland, in 1990. Mr Whyle was a member of the 12th Platoon, B Company, 24th New Zealand Infantry Battalion.

Description: Photograph album containing commercial tourist print sets of Italian cities, circa 1939-1945, collected and compiled by Thomas Martin during his service in World War II. Images from Venice include buildings and sites such as Santa Maria della Salute, various views of St Mark’s Basilica and St Mark’s Square, Doge’s Palace, The Bridge of Sighs, scenes along the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, The Ponte dell'Accademi, San Giorgio Maggiore Island, and Ca’ D’Oro. Images from Milan include the Duomo di Malano cathedral (including door detail), Milano Centrale railway station (exterior and interior stairway), Arena Civica, Porta Sempione city gate, interior of Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II, Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio (including cloister), interior of La Scala, painting Leonardo Da Vinci’s 'The Last Supper', Raphael Urbinas 'Le Mariage de la Vierge', Pora Tincinese and city beyond, Sforza Castle, a fountain with a [Franciscan?] monk statue, and the monument to King Victor Emmanuel II in Piazza del Duomo with the façade of Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II in the background. Description: Booklet of information prepared by the NZ YMCA sponsored by th National patriotic Fund Board of New Zealand. about a leave centre at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, at which soldiers could take rest and leave, because the War had now ceased. Soldiers were encouraged to bring sports equipment, blanket, great-coat, change of underclothes, socks, personal gear, sweater, sunglasses, andshoes or sandals, gas-cape, face-cream, and mess gear. Their route to the centre is described - through Vicenza and Verona, past Lake garda, to Madonna di Campiglio. The eight-day schedule is given, as is a guide to the hotel rooms, the service and tariffs. Alpine sports activities included climbing, tramping, skiing, and there was a local souvenir shop and barber shop. Quantity: 1 album(s). Physical Description: Booklet of 12 pages, 198 x 130 mm.
