Description: Ray McGee was born in Wellington, 1923. Recalls early education in Kilbirnie, Newtown and Miramar. Discusses employment with Taubman's paint factory and Elextrolux before conscription into the New Zealand Army aged eighteen and training at Waiouru. Lists positions held as a traffic cop, guard at the Japanese prisoner of war camp, Baring Head lighthouse guard and overseeing the Island Bay power links. Tells of discharge from the Army due to youth and joining the Merchant Navy as a trimmer. Describes duties, routes to Australia and cargoes of his first ship the Kaikorai. Outlines transfer to hospital ship the Maunganui as a peggy boy, or messman, travelling to the Middle East via Ceylon, Bombay, Aden and Port Twefik. Remembers depth charges at Gilbraltar in 1943. Discusses the Maunganui crew, hospital boat practices, loading casualities, picking up wounded in the Mediterranean and returning Scottish servicemen to Glasgow. Mentions fellow ship the Oranje. Chronicles transfer to the Kaikorai as a fireman and later as a donkeyman before joining the Kanna in New Zealand. Talks about New Zealand ferries the Rangatira and the Wahine. Outlines involvement with the Union Steam Ship Company. Details employment in various freezing works, with Fletcher Steel and the Timaru Harbour Board.
