Description: Collection comprises ten interviews about Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, Wellington, conducted by interviewer Belinda De Mayo with the first generation of volunteeers, guardians, and guides at the eco-sanctuary. Interviewees are: Bob Cameron, Chris Horne, Dorothy Picken, Eleanor Bentley, Ethne Wyndham-Smith, Hilary Hunter, John Burnet, Joyce Foster, Pam Fuller, and Richard Northmore. This project received an Ministry for Culture and Heritage Award in Oral History in 2019. Title supplied by Library. Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, Wellington, was formerly known as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the first fenced eco-sanctuary in New Zealand. Volunteers at Zealandia can be involved in various activities such as track maintenance, biosceurity, bird feeding and monitoring, visitor experience, and fund raising. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: The Wizard Gandalf flies a giant eagle, both from the Lord of the rings film trilogy, over two Wellingtonians. One says 'Bloody birds, its the same up in Karori'. The Zealandia wildlife sanctuary, situated in the suburb of Karori, Wellington, had bred very successfully kaka parrots. They had expanded their feeding territory from the sanctuary and were attacking gardens in Karori itself, to the residents' annoyance. Wellington citizens, where Peter Jackson's film studios were situated, were very aware of his Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. The Norway rat which was found on the ferry due to sail to Tiritiri Matangi was stopped from getting to the island sanctuary due to quick action by the ferry operator. The three Sopranos characters who have come to catch the rat are Tony Soprano, Silvio Dante and Paulie Walnuts. Paulie Walnuts has a piece of cheese while Tony Soprano pulls a mousetrap from his jaclet pocket. The passengers on the ferry look round in amazement.
