Description: Interview with Tom Leong, born in Canton (Guangzhou), China, in 1930. Includes: memories of life in China as a child; his family background. The Sino-Japanese war which was the reason for his coming to New Zealand as a refugee. Journey to and arrival in New Zealand. The New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, and starting school in Wellington. Working with his father and brother in the green grocery trade. Tom's later education was at Victoria University via Wellington Technical College. He took a batchelor of Science, and later, at Canterbury University, a Batchelor of Engineering (Electrical). During his university years in Christchurch, Tom got involved with the local Chinese community and met his future wife, Patsey. They married in 1954. On completing his degree in 1953 Tom worked first in the State Hydro-Electricity Department. By 1959 he was working on hydro projects on the Waikato River - Ohakuri, Atiamuri and Waipapa. He then transferred to head office in the early 1960s and worked on the first stage of the project to build a link across Cook Strait (Cook Strait Cable). In 1962 Tom got the job of supply engineer with the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, and he and his family moved to Masterton. He gives an account of his lie and work in Masterton including the local organisations and projects with which he was involved. When he retired from the Wairarapa Electric Power Board in 1992, he and his wife moved to Auckland. He worked for five years as a tutor for the Electrical Development Association, and in 1997 was appointed secretary to Auckland Utility Operators Group Inc. He was also staff assessor for the Institution of Proffessional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). Tom concludes with a general statement about his experience of life in New Zealand. Description: Watercolour and charcoal portrait of Ma Loo by Janet Paul dated 1981. Portrays Loo Shun Yen (1910-2006), who was known as Ma Loo, a Thorndon fruiterer, seated in her Tinakori Road shop. She wears a long blue floral dress, and rests her hand on a stand beside her. In the background is a weighing scale, a pot plant, and a sign displaying the price of potatoes. Ma Loo is surrounded by fruits and vegetables on stands. The floor is tiled in green and blue. The work is characteristic of Paul's style, featuring large, expressive brush strokes and bold colours. Also includes a newspaper clipping about Ma Loo from 2006, likely written shortly after her death in early January. Title taken from item. Description: Booklet published predominantly in Chinese. It contains acknowledgement to Detective Hamish McCardle of the Asian crime Unit, Wellington Region Police who initiated the idea of the booklet, which was to help Chinese residents "deal with a range of incidents or issues that can occur" (illustrations suggest these include home security, emergency preparedness, assault, family welfare, drugs, drinking and driving, graffiti, car security. It contains photographs of the exteriors of the police stations in Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua. The final pages include a list of organisations to contact for help. Description: Papers, and various objects relating to the activities of the Chee Kung Tong (CKT) and Chinese in Wellington. The collection includes items from the Chee Kung Tong, from the Chung's shop, and from the Chung family. Collection includes banners and flags; divining sticks; boxed candles; uniforms worn by members of an orchestra; stringed and wooden musical instruments; percussion instruments used by the orchestra; and printing blocks and an ink grinder likely used in the Chung's shop. Also includes photographic prints of Chinese in Wellington and Chee Kung Tong, and copy negatives and photocopies of prints made by the Library from originals belonging to the donor of the collection. For further information about the CKT and this collection consult the publication that accompanied an Alexander Turnbull Library exhibition on the CKT: `Chee Kung Tong: The Hung League in New Zealand', 1991. A copy is held in the collection backfile. Doris Chung's husband, Chung Dick Lee, was the last president of the New Zealand Chee Kung Tong.
