Britannia (Yacht : 1953-1997)

The Royal Yacht Britannia, or Her Majesty's Yacht (HMY) Britannia was built by John Brown & Co, Clydebank, Scotland. Launched 16 April 1953 by Queen Elizabeth II and commissioned 11 January 1954. Decommissioned 11 December 1997. Now an exhibition ship, permanently moored in Edinburgh.

Description: Colour transparencies taken by James (Jim) Watt of yachting trips and events relating to yachting, 1974 to 1988. Royal yacht 'Britannia' is pictured moored at Lyttelton during the 1974 Commonwealth Games. Watt's yacht 'Matariki' is photographed in a number of locations, including moored at Great Barrier Island. Also includes photograph of Sea Bee Air float plane ZKENY, which flew to locations in the Hauraki Gulf such as Great Barrier Island. A series of transparencies show the launch of Gerry Clark's book 'The Totorore Voyage' at a tearoom venue in 1988. Also included is a photograph of Clark's sailing medals and awards including the Royal Cruising Club Tilman Medal, The Blue Water Medal of the Cruising Club of America, and the North Harbour Board Blue Water Trophy.
