Soul music

Evolved amongst African American communities in the United States during the 1950s to 1970s. Notable record labels producing soul music during this formative period include Motown Records, Stax Records and Atlantic Records. Soul music, which includes the Motown sound, has its roots rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel music. It has developed into a number of different genres, including Memphis soul, Progressive soul and Neo soul.

Description: Comprises digital photographs of reggae/rock/soul musical group The Midnights performing during the 2005 Massey University Wellington campus orientation week. Photographs taken by Czeslaw Ian Jones Massey for Wellington Students Association (M@WSA) and for use in the student magazine 'Magneto'. Photographs show members of The Midnights performing inside a marquee. Performance was part of a range of events, activities and workshops for new postgraduate and undergraduate students, and was organised by M@WSA. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music.
