Waitangi Mission Station 1844-1852

Waitangi Mission Station, near Clive in the Hawke's Bay Region, was established by William Colenso in 1844, and operated until 1852 when Colenso was dismissed by the church. Now an historic site. A chapel was built at Te Awapuni, which is another place name associated with this Mission Station.

Description: Addressed "Kia Neho" on the outside of the letter, and at the top of the first page says "No Waitangi 1 Mei 1851", from Waitangi, 1 May 1851, from Mereana. Mentions that Paora Motutawa's party has arrived at Awapuni for the hui. Sends greetings to Hamuera and Eruini, and says that Hairamina has died. Ends with an affectionate mihi to Colenso. The name Mereana appears as 'Mereuna' at first glance, but an analysis of the writing confirms the name of the correspondent as Mereana. The place that Mereana wrote from, Waitangi, is based in the Hawkes Bay (where the Waitangi Regional Park is currently). Awapuni refers to a pā at the Ngaruroro River mouth.
