From: Effects of the Wahine Disaster 10 April 1968 oral history project

By: Murray, Elizabeth Anne, 1936-

Reference: OHInt-0976-04

Description: Interview with Elizabeth Murray (nee Gilmour) born in Hastings in 1936. Talks about her family background, childhood on a farm at Eslthorpe, Hawkes Bay, and her schooling. Discusses her mother having been an early student at the Home Science School at Otago University College, and the history of the School. Talks about studying Home Science at Otago and then training as a dietician at Auckland Public Hospital 1957/58. Mentions travelling to London by sea, living and working in London and Glasgow and touring the Continent with friends. Mentions diagnosing herself as diabetic after she returned to New Zealand, and working at the Health Department. Discusses food, diet, alcohol and health. Discusses taking the ferry rather than flying on 9 April 1968, the Wahine being quite empty, and not being aware of the weather forecast. Describes not being "fazed" by the ship rolling, and seeing "rocks on the side" when she left her cabin the next morning. Recalls the announcement to put on lifejackets, a shudder, and going to a muster station. Comments on how calm passengers were in the lounge, activity on deck, what she heard from the wind and the loud speaker, and worrying about her diabetes and injection. Recalls the boat tilting, the order to abandon ship, being directed away from lifeboats on the port side to the stern where the propellers were out of the water, and seeing a dead woman in the sea. Tells how officer [Rod] Luly ordered them to jump into the sea, tying her lifejacket tightly before she jumped, and being taken by the boiling current. Refers to being picked up by a fishing boat, taken to Queens Wharf, and sent to Wellington Hospital because she was injured. Mentions being greeted by a friend at the Accident and Emergency Department, charge nurse Molly Loftus (nee Anderson). Comments on hypothermia, probably being in shock, but how her practical knowledge probably helped her. Refers to being reported missing in the paper, a friend bringing her clothes and being taken home. Describes how her experience affected her, and her future husband (who had been involved on the Eastbourne coast) helping her to recover. Comments on having moved away from Wellington in 1986 but now being interested in meeting survivors and rescuers. Interviewer(s) - Shelley Dunford.
