Photographs of Cook Islands, Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Mauke, and Atiu

Date: 1923-1933

From: Kingsbury family :Photographs of Cook Islands

Reference: PA1-o-1233

Description: A view of the Cook Islands (mostly Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Mauke and Atiu) compiled by the Kingsbury family between 1923 and 1933. The main focus is on the New Zealand/European community living there, most of whom were members of the New Zealand Government's administration, or were there for business and trade (eg the staff of A B Donalds). There are images of social events such as tennis and cricket games, garden parties, the Avatiu Football Club's umukai, opening a bowling green, a race meeting on the beach at Nikao, meeting people associated with a visit of the Melanesian Mission ship "Southern Cross," and entertaining tourists off visiting ships. Also photographs of events around official visits such as those of Gordon Coates, and Sir Maui Pomare. Many other images are of groups and individuals. Cook Islanders also feature. There are those working for the New Zealand administration, members of rugby clubs, participants in official visits, in ceremonial events such as the Coronation of Vaikai Kainuku, Ariki of Takitumu, Rarotonga in March 1931, in communal fish drives, a sunday school demonstration at Ngatangiia, Rarotonga, as family groups and individuals. Of the islands there are many scenic views - the landscape, the vegetation, the coast, towns, villages, principle buildings such as churches, the administration buildings in Avarua, Cook Island houses, European houses, commercial buildings, wharves, and ships. Three pages of images record hurrianes or storms. All were taken at the waterfront at Avarua, one group on the 1st of April 1926, and the other group on the 15th of February 1931.
