Ball Hut (Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, N.Z.)

Tramping hut next to the Tasman Glacier, south of Ball Glacier. Fourth hut of the same name on this site. The first hut was built in 1891 and destroyed by an avalanche in 1925. The second hut burnt down in 1977, and the third was removed in 2009 after the moraine wall eroded to within 10 meters of the hut. The hut is managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

Description: Photographs of YMCA Christmas trips in 1938 and 1939, to Milford Sound and the Whanganui River, taken by William Hall Raine. As well as photographs there are a number of newspaper and magazine cuttings, some of which were produced in the New Zealand Free Lance (January 25, 1939), following the Wellington Y.M.C.A. party on their trip to Milford. The photographs of the Whanganui trip were not taken by William Hall Raine, as he was on the Milford trip at the time. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes views of Lake Coleridge, the Rakaia River, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki showing the outflow river, views from the Hermitage (including Mts Sefton and Cook), terminal moraine in the Tasman Valley, and Ball Hut and the botanising ground with gentians and mountain daisies. Slides on this sheet are numbered 176-206 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. (No. 175 of Lake Coleridge, is not noted on this sheet, but is one of those removed for the lecture series). Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. [175], 178-179, 181-184, 189, 191-194, 197, 204) showing views of Lake Coleridge and country around, Rakaia River, the road to Mount Cook (Aoraki/Mount Cook), Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook, Mount Sefton, Hermitage Hotel, and the Tasman Valley from Ball Hut looking up the glaciers. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Camping and mountaineering in Canterbury

Description: Views, mostly snapshots, many of which show a group of eleven men camping in the Cook River area circa 1920s, taken by unidentified photographers. Other images are very clear portraits, but neither the subjects nor the phtographers are identified. The views of the group camping show the men's arrival at the end of the road in buses and cars, prior to their pushing a trailer filled with camping equipment over a stoney river bed to the campsite, tents erected in bush settings, and several different mountain huts including one A-frame hut and two huts identified as the Havelock Hut and Ball Hut. Jack Pattle is identified as the photographer of the Havelock Hut (no. 29); Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann took photograph no. 30 which shows Jack Clarke, Dr Parker, Rev H E Newton and Billy Batson at Ball Hut in 1902 when they made the first crossing of Graham's Saddle in 1902 (identified from copies at the University of Canterbury). Photograph no. 37 shows a cartoon of "Bergschrund Bill" (possibly Bill Batson?). Photographs no. 31, 33, and 46 show a large group of men having a picnic at a mountain hut circa 1920s (possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club); photographs 39, 40, 41 and 47 show men in military uniform about 1941. Nos 40 and 41 show a combimed reunion dinner of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and New Zealand Alpine Club members in the 2NZEF and RAF Middle East Forces, held Saturday July 26, 1941 at Kings Hotel, Cairo, while no. 39 shows an unidentified soldier and no. 47 is inscribed "All good wishes, John Simpson" presumably both members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club or the NZ Alpine Club. Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Description: Tramping party with Algernon Charles Gifford (member of the party and photographer), in the Southern Alps. Views of the area, crossing glaciers, crevasses, and scenes with the party relaxing at various points, including a stop at Ball Hut in which three of the group are seated outside, their guide, Peter Graham, standing in the doorway. None of the photographs in the album are identified, but information is given as to date and the name of their guide on the record for the original glass negative (Reference No. 1/2-060503-G, Alexander Turnbull Library, Photographic Archives) This album appears to be linked with Gifford albums 2, 4, 5 and 7. An undated article Gifford wrote for the Oamaru Mail, entitled `To Mount Cook by motor car' is pasted into the back of Gifford Album 2 (PA1-o-182). The article talks about a group travelling by car to Mount Cook, and then tramping in the mountains near Mount Cook. Gifford Album 4 shows the party travelling in two Darracq automobiles, while the other albums show the party in the mountains, with mountain scenes, the group crossing the Tasman Glacier, and relaxing at various spots, including at Ball Hut, and Malte Brun Hut.
