Built between 1882 and 1900 on Wellington's Mount Cook as the first stage of a maximum security prison, and known as Mount Cook Gaol, but never used for that purpose. It became a military barracks circa 1902. In 1902 was officially named Alexandra Military Depot but was popularly known as Alexandra Barracks. It was demolished in 1931 to provide the site for the Dominion Museum.
