A series of riots in Dunedin, Auckland, and Wellington over January to May 1932, all starting with peaceful protests and escalating to disorder in the streets. Also known as the Depression Riots.

Unemployed workers' protest,Wellington Town Hall, during Depression

Description: Unemployed workers protesting at the entrance portico of Wellington Town Hall, with policemen looking on. The speaker is Bill (William Daniel) O'Reilly, labour organiser, communist, and active member of the Unemployed Workers' Movement. On his left partly hidden by a hat is Joseph Turner, representative of the Wellington branch of the Unemployed Workers' Movement. Some of the men carry signs, including one that reads "Workers of the world UNITE", and a coffin is being carried with slogans painted on. Taken during the Depression by an Evening Post staff photographer probably in 1932 or 1933. Other photographs of the same event are at 1/2-084825-G, 1/2-084830-G.
