Alert (Launch)

RNZN Harbour Defence Motor Launch Q1189 was one of 16 Harbour Defence Launches commissioned between 1943 and 1944. Laid up in 1947 and sold to Alec Black of Dunedin, who converted it for charter work. The 'Alert' was used as a research vessel, taking scientists to the southern islands and the southern ocean. In the 1960s owned by Sir Ernest Davis, mayor of Auckland. Later used for deer recovery in Fiordland, and has remained around Bluff and Fiordland since. In 2018 owned by Linus Fleming.

The album opens with views taken on a trip to the West Coast in January 1954; followed by a West Coast museum trip, February 1940; a Neslson-Westhaven expedition, November 1952; John and Pam Salmon's honeymoon in the South Island in December 1948; and a trip to Mt. Algidus, February 1946. The next trips in the album were the Mt. Arthur tableland museum expedition, February 1946, and again in February 1948; the Bold Peak district, February 1943; trip around the Sounds on "The Alert", August 1948; air trip over the Sounds in April 1949; and then the South Pacific Science Congress, Auckland-Christchurch, February 1949. Description: Photographs, some probably taken by Lorna Rowland, to illustrate articles on New Zealand she wrote for the 'New Zealand Freelance' in the 1950s. Photographs are numbered, although the sequence is not complete, and some are inscribed on the back. They include images taken on Stewart Island/Rakiura, Tia Island, and in the North and South Islands of people, landscapes, and buildings. Most of the images of people are in rural settings and include a group of men "wild goose hunting", two deerstalkers, Roy Traill on Stewart Island/Rakiura, and Tom Bragg on Tia Island with kelp drying for pōhā (kelp bags for food). Also includes a photograph of Lorna Rowland on board the 'Alert' (Harbour Defence Motor Launch), possibly at Dusky Sound. Title transcribed from item.
