Bishop's Court (Wellington, N.Z.)

The residence of the Anglican Bishop of Wellington. Associated with Old St Pauls Cathedral, Mulgrave Street, Wellington.

The first Bishop's Court house was built circa 1862 in a wooden Gothic revivial style on a site south of Old St Pauls donated by A G Tollemache in 1860 for a Bishop's residence. This house was demolished in 1879.

The second residence was built 1879-80 in a plain Italianate style, and still stands at 32 Mulgrave Street, on the south side of the cathedral. The architect was William Charles Chatfield, and the builders were Mitchell and Thompson. Four bishops resided there.

In 1940 the bishop's residence moved to a house on Eccleston Hill. The Mulgrave street house was let as a boarding house and apartments.

In 1963 it was sold to the Ministry of Works and Development who used it as an office building. Between 1969 and 1992 under the auspices of the States Services Commission, various branches of the Justice Department, including District Family Courts, occupied the building. During this time the interior was substantially altered.

In 1993 the building was sold back to the New Zealand Anglican Church Pension and Mission boards who continue to occupy the building.

Also known as Bishopscourt.
