Description: Albums containing ca 2200 photographs taken and collected by Joseph Lowthian Wilson, who was the North Canterbury reporter and agent for the Christchurch Press from 1864-1913 (based in Kaiapoi). The images have a news emphasis with coverage ranging from accidents, floods, and snowstorms to visiting dignitaries, local personalities and groups, buildings, and municipal openings (bridges, swimming pools, etc.) The collection is also strong in images of Kaiapoi Maori and material relating to the South African War and North Canterbury Mounted Rifles. While focussed on the Waimakariri District, the entire Canterbury Region and the Eastern Cape of South Africa are also represented.
