Description: Shows a general view of the small settlement of Karatea or Galatea, with groups of figures standing sitting or lying on the flat area in the foreground. In the right foreground is the entrance to a ridgepole tent. The ground rises behind the figures towards the whare and pataka of the settlement, to a church on the brow of the hill, with further hills and trees beyond. Description: Photographic postcard shows a large collection of circular tents pitched at Rangiotu for the military training of soldiers for World War I. The verso contains a message from Rifleman E Piner (Edward Piner, a rifleman with B Company of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion) to his sister Ada. He mentions Bill Mass[e]y and Jim Allen as being "just standing up the line now". Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Photograph on postcard, 88 x 138 mm. Photographs of the Pori area, north eastern Wairarapa

Description: The two Nelson farms in this album are "Nga Mahanga" (Hugh Nelson's place), and "Taumata" (Jack Nelson's place). Views show the farm houses, and farm buildings, the farm land and landscape of the Pori area partially cleared of bush. One group of images shows the countryside under snow. There are a series of five images recording the building of a stables and buggy house, also a view of the woolshed and sheep at "Taumata". Scenic views of the area include the Makuri River ford, native forest interiors with pongas, and native forest. Four images show the interior of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are two photographs of local Maori standing beside tents in a bush clearing, one of army volunteers in uniform standing in front of tents, two of soldiers at an unidentified event, many of horses, some of hens, dogs, cats, and cattle. Two prints show one of the Nelson brothers cutting long grass with a scythe and 4 others are views of an unidentified house and its garden at Tiraumea (a distant view of this house surrounded by pinus radiata shelter belts and its surrounding countryside can be seen in album PA1-o-1206, page 7 captioned "Tiraumea"). There are also some images of "Newstead" the Monckton family home at Featherston. There is only one photograph of a Nelson family group. The rest are individual images of adults and children which include: Frederick Monckton, Lucy Miller (who married Frank Nelson), Winifred, [Lornie?], Dorothea, [Frances?], the brothers and the children. Description: Photographs of various areas in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region and Wellington Region circa 1890s, probably taken by George William Barltrop (identification from other albums in this sequence). A large number show church buildings, including a Roman Catholic church in Johnsonville; an Anglican church in Featherston; St Luke's Anglican Church in Greytown; a church in Carterton; St Matthews Anglican church in Masterton; a church in Pahiatua; one in Ashhurst; an Anglican church in Bunnythorpe; St John's Anglican church in Feilding; All Saints Anglican church in Palmerston North; and a church at Kiwitea. A small group show the area around Alfredton, with a timber mill, several types of saw, and teams of horses transporting logs. Description: Waiouru Military Camp in 1940-1941. Mount Ruapehu is in the background. Photographer unidentified. The bell tents were used in the late winter of 1940, and the early summer of 1941 while 800 Ministry of Works tradesmen built wooden barracks. Given the small ammount of snow on Mount Ruapehu, the photograph was probably taken late January-early March 1941. (Info from John Archer, Waiouru, 2009).
