Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Middle East and Italy during World War 2, 1943-1944, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Many individuals identified are listed above, but while many others are identified in group portraits they are not named above. This album changes between the Middle East and Italy, with the bulk of the Middle Eastern images between pages 1 and 71, and the Italian scenes on pages 49-52, and from 72 onwards, with a few Middle Eastern items interspersed. Recreation for soldiers with sporting activities including athletics, cricket, swimming, tennis and softball, some of which are in competition with personnel from other groups including South African Division Artillerymen. New Zealand engineers building a pontoon bridge across the Suez Canal with the help of Belgian Congo troops; NZ reinforcements arriving in the Middle East; troops voluntarily donating blood; parades and inspections by Freyberg and Inglis, and decorations presented by them (p 9-13, 23, 33, 36, 62). Hitchhiking from Maadi into Cairo; street tailors altering uniforms while the soldiers wait (p 15-16); camp cinema. A large number of reunions of personnel from various New Zealand districts held at different restaurants in Cairo, including Rotorua & district; Levin & district; Arrowtown, Queenstown Lakes District; Wairarapa; and Temuka. Occupational therapy for convalescent troops including embroidery and leather-work toys (p 20-22); a leave camp for forces on the Palestinian coast, run by British Army staff assisted by ATS, and Italian Prisoners of War and European women assistants. Description: Photograph album relating to Agnes Mary Buckley's service as nurse during World War II, 1941-1942. Photographer is unidentified, but some images are likely taken by Agnes. Album contains images of the Japanese Gardens in Helwan, Egypt [stock tourist images?]. Egyptian street scenes show local people, donkeys, a knife sharpener, and various carts. Agricultural images show sheep, water buffalo, and ploughing. The Great Sphinx of Giza and pyramids are also featured (one view is from the top of a pyramid). Military personal are depicted during recreation breaks, receiving bravery awards (Ron J Moore and T M Hutchinson), and convalescing in hospital. Agnes Buckley appears in a number of images. One image shows a nurse wearing a gas mask and another a group holding up captured Nazi swastika flags. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by Corporal Stuart McLean when he was with the 2NZEF in the Middle East, 1941-1942. Photographs include everyday life, monuments and ancient sites in Beirut, Baalbek, Homs (now Hims), Aleppo (now Halab), and parts of Syria. Scenes associated with the various campaigns in the Middle East and North Africa, include one of Nissen huts in Syria, machine gunners and sweeping for landmines in the Western desert, captured enemy guns, the wreck of a Messerschmitt Bf 109 (ME 109), some of the 74,000 prisoners taken at El Alamein, and parades and medal presentation (seen from a distance) after the North African Campaign. Description: Photograph album compiled by Elizabeth Buckley of Taihape of photographs sent by her daughter Agnes Mary Buckley during her service as nurse during World War II, 1941-1942. Photographer is unidentified, but some images are likely taken by Agnes Mary Buckley and soldier Ron J Moore. Album contains images of Agnes's departure from Wellington, including portraits of Agnes in her nurses uniform, and a family group. Images of the ocean voyage feature deck scenes with other nurses and views from the side of the boat. Egyptian images are mainly tourist snaps around cities including Cairo, Alexandria, and Helwan. Street scenes show gharry carts, nurses, local people, and donkeys. Mosques, churches, Saladin Citadel, King Farouk Palace, various gardens, and the Great Sphinx of Giza, also feature. Contains images of the military camp, including Agnes's tent, the mess where the nurses ate, and other details of daily life such as practicing fitting gas masks and a garden party held for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). Further images of Libya [possibly taken by Ron J Moore?] show military life, images of towns (mosques, locals, and animals), and geographical features (salt lake, oases, and rocky outcrops), and the aftermath of conflict. Transportation is featured with vehicles moving through the desert and convoys that have been attacked; the burnt out truck in which Captain Beech was killed and his grave are photographed. Also shows the Ford of Murzuk, Italian prisoners of war, soldiers' camps in the desert. Also contains a copy of a poem 'If' and a newspaper clipping of a photograph showing Moore and T M Hutchinson (both in wheelchairs) with Buckley at the New Zealand hospital following the men receiving bravery awards from General Bernard Freyberg (not pictured).
