Description: Shows an abstract interpretation of Tane Mahuta within surrounding forest. The giant kauri stands imposingly at the front, represented in black and other dark colours, with the texture, light and shadow of the forest represented by the various fabrics used Steven regarded this work as a collaboration with the Maori artist Heni Sherratt, who designed the patterned fabric in the collage. The two met while Steven was teaching art to Maori children on the East Coast in the late 1940s. When she went to London in 1951 Steven was invited to participate in the Ascher Award at the Tate Gallery, and contributed this collage to the exhibiton. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - A.M.
