Te Wai a te Rua ti Pā

A major pā near modern Temuka, or Arowhenua, its name meaning the steam that arises from the cabbage tree ovens. It had been a Waitaha pā until Te Rauparaha swept through the east coast of the South Island in the 1820s. By 1848, it was a Ngai Tahu pā and fortified. Its ridges and pits can still be seen, about 3 kilometers closer to the coast than the outskirts of Temuka. Also called Te Wai a te Rua-ti Pā.
