Description: Album of photographs, postcards and newspaper cuttings relating to Samoa and Tonga, circa 1920s. Many of the photographs, and some of the newspaper cuttings have limited captions, or no identification at all. At the beginning of the album there is a signed Christmas card from George Spafford Richardson, with a photograph of him and another European standing in front of a fale with a large group of Samoan men. One image of Robert Louis Stevenson ([p 2]), is signed by him, and another one shows the tomb of Stevenson and his wife Frances Matilda (Aolele). There are a number of views of Vailima, Stevenson's home, one early view showing Stevenson on the verandah with a group of women and another man standing above looking over the balustrade. Description: Photographs of Samoa taken during the 1920s by unidentified photographers. Images include scenes of Samoan ceremonies, including the presentation of Fine Mats at Mulinu'u; an investiture; Anzac Day, placing wreaths on the graves of soldiers who died in samoa; scenes of the Faipule (this image with the inscription "Faipule. Samoan Parliament"); ceremonial welcoming canoes; Sir Charles Fergusson, and General George Spafford Richardson; and scenes at various schools, including group portraits of pupils and staff, and sporting teams. Another sequence shows the damage which occurred during a hurricane in 1925, including the grounding of the ship Lady Roberts, and destruction of plantations and buildings. Two photographs have an additional historical note: On page 72: "Visit to native village. `Historical photo. This indicates the rising of the organisation of the "Mau". General Richardson visits the biggest villages. Note the poor attendance and the disturbed countenance of the Chief'. General Richardson and party listening to the orator's speech" and, on page 77 "Visit of General Richardson to the village of Lufi Lufi (Note the poor attendance. Description: Photographs of Samoa, taken by unidentified photographers, most with no description. Identification for many of them from comparison with Rutherford albums 1 & 2 (PA1-o-445, PA1-o-446). One photograph, taken circa 1890s, taken in Dunedin by Armstrong Photographers, shows the Riddell family with Bessie and James Mathieson (grandparents of Donald Alexander John Rutherford?) Samoan scenes include damage caused by a hurricane in 1925; celebrations for Lord and Lady Bledisloe, with General Herbert Hart and his wife, and George Frederick Hufnagel-Betham. Schools shown include the London Missionary Society Boys' High School at Malua, Ifi Ifi School, Vaipouli School, the Apia Technical School, Avele School and Malifa School. Description: Snapshots relating to Alice Brown, taken in Fiji and Samoa circa 1920s to 1930s. A few of the images have pencilled captions on the back, but most have no information. Many of the scenes show everyday life in Fiji, including burning off (sugar cane?); meke dancers; various kinds of fruits and vegetables; thatched dwellings; church buildings; net fishing; young boys climbing up coconut palms; a yacht race; Fijians and Fijian Indians; and Europeans swimming and picnicking. Samoan scenes include Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb; a Roman Catholic Church near Apia; thatched houses; a group of European women having a picnic on a lawn, and on a beach wearing swimsuits. Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments.
