Description: Contains research notes, typewritten and handwritten waiata and newspaper clippings. Includes `A Maori love-song': Whakapukupuke ai au-e! Te roimata i aku kamo...; and an article about `The death leap of Tikawe' with annotations. Also includes `Tangi song' chanted by Takarongi [Takarangi] Mete Kingi and others at the tangihanga ceremony over the late Premier, at Parliament House, Wellington, June 21st, 1906: Whakaronga [whakarongo?] e te rau, tenei te tupuna o te mate, ka iri kia au, i tipu i te Reinga... Another `Tangi song' sung by Wi Pere and other East Coast natives: Haere ra e Koro! Koutou ko matua - unuhia i te rito o te harakeke ka tu i te aroakapa... Also a `Ngai Tahu dirge' sung by Timoti Whiua and Tioti Ropitini [George Robinson] of Wairewa Little River, Canterbury: Pu ma uru, e riringi mai nei-i-e!... Also includes a waiata tangi (mo Te Awaawa, rangatira o Ngati Whakaue mo tona matenga): Ka moe koa Taupiri [Taupori?] o te rewarewa, e tu tai ana ra te Kauika taramea... Also a waiata with translation entitled `Tongakohu's lament. The Maori fairy chief's farewell to Ngongotaha Mount'. Other typewritten and handwritten waiata and extracts. A typewritten chant `The sword chant of Thorstein Raudi' [possibly typed by B Stowell?]. Letter to Cowan by P Buck dated 20th Dec 1922, discusses Cowan having loan of Buck's France diaries and Gallipoli diary. Description: Comprises two manuscripts: - A single quarto sheet from a commonplace book, original owner unidentified. The sheet has written text on both sides. On one side is an entry by Hoani Wiremu Hīpango, with written greetings to his fellow Christians and Bible verses in Te Reo Māori with an incomplete English translation, dated 2 April 1856. The other side of the sheet includes three verses of a French hymn that begins with "Seigneur, dirige tous mes pas". Signed and dated P.P.R. June 1855. A pencil annotation beneath the hymn reads "W/M 1853". - An individual cut signature of Wesleyan missionary Thomas Buddle. This is adhered to another paper fragment annotated in ink with "Pres. Australia Conf.", and in pencil with the date "1844-". The full signature reads "Thomas Buddle Fin: Sec, N.Z.". This may relate to Buddle's tenure as financial secretary of the Wesleyan Native Institution, which was established in 1844. Title supplied by Library. In 1855, Hoani Wiremu Hīpango travelled to England with missionary Richard Taylor. Before their return to New Zealand Hīpango appears to have written in a commonplace book. The leaf, with French hymn attached, was later separated from the book at an unknown date. Quantity: 1 folder(s) commonplace book sheet and fragment. Physical Description: Single sheet (28.2 x 22cm) and 2 paper fragments (adhered together). Provenance: Purchased from Douglas Stewart Fine Books, Melbourne, who acquired it from bookseller Peter Moore, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
