Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library. This copy lacks a printed inscription on the recto of copy D-001-009 "Presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890" Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Newspaper clippings, correspondence and research papers relating to oil exploration in Taranaki and an article Cowan wrote for Enzed Junior `Told on Waimate Pa: A Taranaki rock of history' published November 26, 1938. Handwritten letter to Cowan from Katherine Mercer dated December 8, 1938 in response to the article `Told on Waimate Pa'. Handwritten notes on `Maori Songs' which is titled `A Lament' and also refers to the song as a waiata aroha composed and sung by Mere Rore of the Ngati Rarua Tribe, of Wairau (Marlborough) for her mother Ramari Harepeka Porea Herewini. Includes lyrics in Maori and translation. Also written in pencil on back of memo paper from the United Service Hotel in Christchurch are notes relating to Maori vocabulary about paddling waka. Also a typewritten waka paddling chant. Copy of article written by Cowan in Brett's Christmas Annual December 1, 1924 `The magic of Te-Tahi-o-te-Rangi' a tohunga who was marooned on White Island. Newspaper clippings relating to Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua and North Cape, Te Reinga. Also includes a black & white silver gelatin print, mounted on cardboard of a Maori man and woman. The man is presumed to be Kipa Hemi Whiro, but the woman is unknown. The man is holding a pounamu mere and is dressed in a European suit with a korowai over the top. The unidentified woman is wearing a pounamu tiki and piupiu worn diagonally over the shoulder, over a black dress of the style in fashion in the 1890s. Was in an envelope labelled `Cook Strait' photos 1. Kipa Hemi Whiro (Pelorus) 2. `Endeavour' at The Brothers. This folder also contains an image of the ship HMS Endeavour. Description: Ngā reta Māori nō Te Tau Ihu. Ko Tiemi Parete te kaiwhiwhi o te nuinga. Ka moe ia i tētahi wahine o te whānau Te Rei. Nā reira, ko tēnei whānau te kaupapa o tēnei kohikohinga. Comprises twenty handwritten documents, associated with Motueka, other places in Te Tau Ihu (the northern part of the South Island), and Taranaki. Most are letters, and most of these are addressed to Tiemi Parete (James/Jimmy Perrott), who married into the Te Rei whānau of Ngāti Rāhiri (Te Āti Awa). Therefore the collection primarily relates to this whānau. Eighteen are in te reo Māori, one is in English, and one is bilingual in English and Māori. The Library is interested in further information on the identities of the tīpuna associated with this collection. Title supplied by Library. Names have been transcribed as expressed in the letters. Arrangement: These letters were inside a vintage tobacco tin that the donor purchased. The letters have been arranged in chronological order. Quantity: 1 folder(s) Twenty letters.. Provenance: Most of the letters in this collection are addressed to Tiemi Parete [James Perrott] of Silver Point, Awaroa, near Totaranui, who married into the Te Rei whānau. Two letters in this collection written from Tapata Wiremu refer to Tapata as James' son-in-law, to Tapata's wife Rangipare as James' daughter, and to Tapata and Rangipare's children Hana and Werawera as James' grandchildren. However, the book "Te Tau Ihu O Te Waka: A History of Māori of Nelson and Marlborough. Volume 3, Ngā Tupuna, the Ancestors" by Hilary and Maui John Mitchell describes James and Horina as having no living descendants, and list Rangipare's parents as Hana Pairata and William Gibbs. This folio was found in the studio room that J L Salmond's father Reverend William Salmond, professor at the University of Otago, may have used and occupied.
