Description: Contains notes about places associated with Kupe in Wellington and Wairarapa, whakapapa, financial records by Tuta Nihoniho and miscellaneous notes about land management There is a lengthy account of the destruction of the Te Arawa canoe by Raumati, and subsequent events, and a related narrative about Raumati's son, Ngarue and his activites and family There are haka and waiata, a list of pa in Taranaki and related iwi, notes about the origins and settlements of various iwi, notes about greenstone, and a narrative about conflicts between Te Ati Awa and Waikato, and the subsequent migration of Te Ati Awa along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa to the Wellington area There are notes about the arrival of Pakeha in New Zealand before Captain Cook, and a note in Elsdon Best's hand that states that much of the information in the manuscript was extracted from the Journal of the Polynesian Society and other published sources Also contains the names of several muskets belonging to the Ngati Toa which were named in a waiata composed by the wife of Te Pukoro, a Ngati Tama/ Ati Awa chief killed in the Wairarapa in the late 1820s. Description: Contains a 6-page notebook of songs and chants with a note at the beginning by S P Smith saying `sent to me by G H Davies, Karore April, 1911'. In Maori the notebook includes notes on Kaioraora (cursing songs) by Topeora, and a waiata `E pa to hau ke Te Wairau e'. Inside the back cover is a copy of a letter in Maori from S P Smith to Whatahoro, New Plymouth 29 August 1911. Several pages relating to legend, waiata and other matters in several hands. Legends include Mataora, Tumatauenga and Kongomaraeroa; Tura and Whiro; Tamatea and the moa; Mataoho; Maui; Tane and others. Some of this material may be from a Ngati Porou source; One section is headed `Waiata a Te Whatu', and there are various waiata among the text which Davies claims have been sung before the Maori Land Court in the Hawkes Bay area. There is also an explanation in Maori and English of the expression `Ariki tapairu' signed by Rawiri Te Rangi Rangikauri. A covering letter from Davies to S P Smith, dated 18 Jul 1902, offering them to the Polynesian Society for publication. There is also an undated note from Elsdon Best to Smith forwarding a letter from Tamahau (Mahupuku?), sent by Davies for publication. An unsigned paper in Maori is probably the letter referred to. Description: A base map of the Nelson Region and the bottom half of the North Island has been used to show ancient footpaths, approximate Iwi boundaries and modern towns and villages which are referred to in a key. Names of Iwi are handwritten within their boundaries. Some placenames are crossed through and others are added, including some written in coloured pencil in the margins with appropriate lines indicating their locations. A vertical line has been drawn through the centre of the map and the annotations are found to the left of this line, although the greater detail is found in the Taranaki Region. Description: Published by McLeod & Slade, Printers, New Plymouth, 1936, as a souvenir of the Maui Pomare Meeting at Manukorihi Pa, Waitara, 27 June, 1936. Also comprises correspondence and clippings. The correspondence consists of a letter from Isolda, Elsa, and Tristan, which includes a musical stave with the words and notation for the waiata 'Hoki hoki tonu mai te wairua o te tau', which is dated Dec 1911. Also a letter from Apirana Ngata, dated 20 May 1940, acknowledging James Cowan's message of condolence relating to the death of 'Bal' who was buried at Maraetaha, in Muriwai. This relates to Te Raumoa Balneavis, who worked closely with politician, Apirana Ngata. The clippings mainly relate to Maui Pomare, and to Taranaki Māori history. There is also a translation of a waiata relating to Taranaki. Includes many annotations by Cowan, and a signed message from Miria Woodbine Pomare. Also the inside cover is signed 'J. Cowan'.
