Description: Contains notes postmarked 19 Aug 1897, mainly in English largely concerning the history of the Te Whaiti wars, with a covering note from Best saying `am sending these old leaves in case I should lost my manuscript'; notes postmarked 19 Aug 1897 in Maori and shorthand on pages numbered 14-22 mainly containing whakapapa and waiata. The first pages of these latter notes are in another hand with note - `Hurae Puketapu N. Ruapani'. Description: Photograph album of images taken by William Fitzgerald Crawford illustrating a trip to Waikaremoana and Nuhaka, Hawkes Bay, and Gisborne District taken between December 27 1897 and 4 Jan 1898 by Crawford, Captain Thomas Crisp, E Crisp, the Rev Edward Jennings, and driver J R Redstone. The album is likely to have been compiled by Crawford as he has made similar, but the annotations were possibly written by one of the Chrisps. The images include many scenic images of rivers, mountain ranges, waterfalls as well as images of camps, huts, ferries,horses, waka, dinghies, carts, hotels, bridges and people, including Maori groups, the men on the trip, a Chief Surveyor's party and other people they met. Ngati Ruapani and Ngati Kahungunu are the two principle iwi associated with the places identified in the album. There may also be other relevant iwi and hapu.
