Description: Watercolour at top left shows a silhouette of a sailing ship at evening or dawn. The ink and watercolour drawing by Alan Reid at top right shows a roughly clad caveman standing outside the doorway of a stone building and watching the approach of his son through a telescope. At lwer right is a half-length portrait a a smiling soldier smoking a cigarette. His right arm is in a plaster and a sling and he wears a Red cross label. Documents the life and military service of Sergeant Ivan F Moore (Service Number 7/1023), who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt and the Balkans during World War One. Volume is illustrated with facsimile reproductions of letters, photographs, postcards, military documents, newspaper cuttings, and printouts from online sources. The letter reproduced in the volume range from Cairo, dated 26 August 1915, to Martinborough, dated 2 January 1930, and includes letters addressed from Palestine and Jerusalem. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Description: An army sports meeting held at Wadi Hanein, Palestine. Photographed by an unknown photographer in November 1917. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - A sports meeting at Wadi Hanein Wadi Hanein is a water course and locality in the vicinity of Jaffa, probably to the south east. It is also one of the wadis that feed into the water courses which reach the coast as the river, Nahr Rubin. Also, according to C Guy Powles in his book "The New Zealanders in Sinai and Palestine," Whitcome and Tombs, 1922, pp 154-155, in 1917 it was the name of a town which was a Jewish garden settlement (the Jewish name of which was "Nachalat Reuben"). On November the 14th 1917 the New Zealand Mounted Division attacked the Turks in the orange groves of Wadi Hanein as part of the British Army's move on Jaffa. Description: Vickers gun section of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles led by 2nd Lieutenant L A Craven, moving into position under aerial bambardment and heavy shelling. Photograph taken by an unknown photographer on the 19th of April 1917 Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - M.G. section (Lt Craven, CMR) under fire Craven managed to get his section into position in spite of the bombardement in time to stop an enemy advance. For this he recieved the Military Cross and accelerated promotion. Later on the same day he was severely wounded and subsequently died of his wounds in New Zealand. (Info from \"The History of The Canterbury Mounted Rifles, 1914-1918,\" edited by Col C G Powles, Whitcomb and Tombs, 1928, p 154).
