Description: Comprises photographs, probably taken by John Porteous, relating to his educational activities (mostly in native schools) and family. The localities are in the Gisborne Region and include Tikitiki, Tuparoa, and Reporua. Specifically, one group of photographs record a rugby match between Tikitiki and Rangitukia schools, and two others show Reporua school children collecting driftwood from the beach and participating in an Arbour Day celebration in 1912. There are a general views of Reporua and Tuparoa and one of Reporua School. Other images are of people grouped in front of unidentified meeting houses. Description: John Woodford gives details of his family background, his childhood in the Houhoupounamu and Waipiro area, the local sports days and circus and working for the local butcher. Describes his working life as a shepherd on Waiorongomai Station with mention of a fire at the Station while he was there; working as a shepherd at Mangaheia Station and the local sports and social life at Tolaga. Describes other Stations in the area that he worked on; Matahiia, Pakihiroa, Whareponga, Waipare and Arowhana. Talks about his marriage, the death of his son, building the Whareponga Road, local fights and a murder, other shepherds and local people, Whareponga School, members of his family, accident at work which resulted in a hospital stay, various work incidents, working at the freezing works and his involvement in various sports especially rugby. Describes the local and regional rugby organisation and playing with George Nepia. Details his life on Pahi Station. Description: The language of the interview is Te Reo and English. Robert Temple Stevens (Ropata Temepara Tipene) describes his family background, being born at Mangawhariki, growing up at Taipiiria near Te Puia Springs, his father being from Ngapuhi, mothers' relations, 16 brothers and sisters, relationship to Jensen family and to Houkamau on his mother's side. Talks about going to Te Puia School, teachers who taught him at different schools, including Mr Trimmer at Hicks bay, the close community of Mangawhariki and Wharekahika where the family moved when he was nine. Comments on the meaning of his name from the opening of Ratana Church in 1929 and the derivation of the name Ropata. Talks about how fighting in the community between friends was common, horses outside the pub, his nannies, moko and the very old age at which his immediate tipuna died. Describes going to work packing horse on Ihungia station when he finished school, the sports and entertainment between the stations, the Tawhiti rugby team and his rugby playing. Details deciding to join the army as a artillery gunner, his experiences in Korea, returning to New Zealand and doing other work before deciding to join the army again. Recounts his service in Malaya where he was a Lance Corporal and his employment since he retired from the army, including mention of driving trucks and buses. Talks about his children and his aspirations for the future.
