Description: Photograph of the coast south of New Plymouth where the Waireka Stream joins the sea. It is captioned "Waireka - taken from site of engagement - shallow remains of trench in foreground". On the reverse is the name H Farmer MacDonald although it is not clear whether he was the photographer or the donor. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Handwritten drafts, research notes and some newspaper clippings relating to the New Zealand Wars, particularly around Taranaki and Waikato, haka and waiata and mountain legends. Includes 'Patriotic chants. The Maori land and the Maori King' which features a haka that was performed at Manawapou in 1854, given to Cowan by Ngahina of Matangarara, who was present at that hui. It begins 'E kore Taranaki e makere atu...'. Also includes 'Haere mai ra' [?] which Cowan describes as a whakatete which begins 'Piri ki whea? Piri ki te whare ki te Kohekohe...' also includes a translation in which Cowan says the composer wrote this to 'shame Wiremu Te Wheoro' who was 'taking sides with the Pakeha'. Also includes mountain legends relating to Taranaki and Ruapehu, and a draft of the 'Battle of Waireka' [1860] and the 'Niger Ballad' and research notes about Hapurona and clippings relating to Waiotapu. Description: Shows an event of 1860 in which British soldiers are attacking the wooden palisades of a pa on a small hill, with hand-to-hand fighting and rifle-shooting in the foreground. A large flag flies from the palisades. Mount Taranaki is shown in the left distance. From an illustration published in the "Illustrated Melbourne post" 20 October 1863, and possibly the "Illustrated Sydney news". The Waireka pa was attacked in 1860. Drawings & Prints has a file print of the image from the "Illustrated Melbourne post", entitled "Storming the Waireka Pah, Taranaki - from a sketch by our special artist". This file print was supplied by the Mitchell Library, Sydney. Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Offset print, 95 x 120 mm.
