Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Lindsay Tait Johnston; history of the Johnston families of Waikaka Valley; land documents; extract from book re 1874 & 1875 land sales (p 14); photographs The original owner was Adam Dickson Johnston who purchased 200 acres in 1874 in the Waikaka Valley, 8 km from Gore. In 2005 the property was owned by his great-grandson Lindsay Johnston and wife Valda. In the intervening years further land was added to the initial block making a total of 536 acres. Description: Henrietta Paskell, born in Gore 1898, is the youngest child of Frederick and Mary Henke. She attended primary school at Waipahi and Arthurton schools leaving to work as a domestic and cow-milker for a number of people. At about age 16 Hettie began work as a waitress at the Commercial Hotel and then later worked in the Club Hotel. After her marriage to Fleming Paskell, they went to work as married couple in Waikaka Valley. They moved to Manuka Creek and then to Milton where Hettie bought and ran a store for a number of years. She remained living in Milton until she moved to Holmdene where she resides now. Description: William Smith was born in Lumsden in 1917. Gives details of his father's gold dredging in the Waikaka Valley. Describes a dredge, its operation and the shareholding of three companies - Lilysleaf, Rosedale and Star Dredging. Discusses associated industries including coal carting to feed the steam engines on the dredges. Mentions the coal came from the Waikaka Valley. Describes the dredge on Cummings' property owned by J A S Aitkin. Recalls the sound and smell of dredges. Describes the landscape of the Waikaka Valley in the 1920s and 1930s with dredge tailings and gorse. Mentions his father's belief that dredging and replacing the top soil and gravel helped drain the valley. Talks about the opposition to dredging. Explains the living conditions of workers on the dredges. Details houses that rose up round the dredges becoming the communities of Maitland and Willowbank. Describes wages of the workers and shareholders and how the gold was extracted by the dredges. Mentions Chinese operating in the area. Recalls what happened to the gold after it was mined and his father bringing home gold from King Solomon's Mine. Details the location and scale of King Solomon's Mine and reasons for its closure.
