Description: Photographs relating to the Dog Tax Rebellion, also known as the Dog Tax War, taken May 1898 in Rawene by Charles P Dawes. The photographs show troops lined up and posing with rifles, a group of men in uniform in front of tents, and a group of Maori civilians laying down arms. In May 1898 Hokianga was the scene of the 'Dog Tax Rebellion' which arose when the Mahurehure hapu of Ngapuhi tribe refused to pay a dog tax instituted by the local county council.
