Description: Green and companions travelling and climbing in Switzerland in 1870 and in 1874. Four views of County Kerry, Ireland, ca 1880. The early Swiss views include Chamounix, Mont Blanc, Jardin, the Road to Evolena, the Dent Blanche, the Briccola Alp, the Col d'Erin, Monte Rosa, the Adler Pass, the Faulberg, the Finster Aarhorn and the Wetterhorn, July - August 1870. The later Swiss views show fewer mountaineering scenes but include log cabins, Jungfrau, Schilthorn, Murren from the Lauterbrunn Valley, on the Sparrerhorn, and Natters. Two men called Peter [Lyle?] and [Henry?] Reid are singled out. The climbing was done with Swiss guides according to Green's diary. The Irish scenes, include Ballinskellig's Bay, Staigue Fort, the Coomeragh, and Landing the direct USA cable [on Valencia Island or Waterville, County Kerry, 1866?]. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Description: The New Zealand section shows the Cap Verde Islands, on the journey towards New Zealand, then the journey to Mount Cook, various camps on the way and the almost completed ascent of Mount Cook by Green, Kaufmann and Boss. The Swiss section of the volume begins with the lower reaches of the Rhine, then Heidelberg, "Our whole party in the Ascenstrasse" showing three women and two men, At the Zesenberg, J. B.'s first glissade (one man slipping in the snow watched by two women and another man), the Eiger, the Munch, at Murren, Schilthorn, the Breithorn, mountain flowers including an orchid, Tschingel Pass, Fall of the Kander, Ascent of Bahnhorn, ascending Zagergrat, at Linkenbad, ascent of Dent du Midi, and Mont Blanc. Most views show two and sometimes three women climbers, probably Green's daughter Agnes and her friend Sherlock Lennon, with the third woman possibly Green's wife, according to information supplied by the donor. The volume is in two sections, in tumble format, with Swiss watercolours at one end, and the New Zealand views at the other. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s).
