Description: Contains a diary kept by Henry Jull on his travels around Japan in 1917, entitled `A Trip to the East'. Henry Jull describes the trip to Japan aboard the SS `Moeraki' with troops from the 23rd and 24th New Zealand Mounteds. Following a stopover in Australia, Henry Jull transfers to the SS `Tango Maru', where he also visits the Phillipines, Hong Kong and China before arriving in Japan. Once in Japan he visits gardens, palaces and the cities of Yokohama, Kyoto, Hakone, Nagoya, Nara, Nikko and Kobe. On his return voyage to New Zealand he visits Honolulu, San Francisco and Fiji. Description: Photograph album of images taken and collected by Peter Henry Rothschild during his time in Japan serving as part of the J Force, 1947 to circa 1949. Most images are captioned and tend to be ordered by geographic area and, in fewer instances, events. - Matsue scenes include photographs of army barracks area and camp, hot springs, and local picture theatre. Hot spring images include some nudity. Also contains images of [Hona?] on the western side of Lake Shinji and Korean settlement [Tahumi?]. - Tokuyama Industry Fair is shown including a telephone display and a colour plan of the city of Tokuyama. - Chofu scenes include the interior and exterior of the Aotearoa Club, ruined buildings, images relating to the fire of 19 Oct 1947 and the rebuilding of the town, brigade headquarters with Rothschild as "RP Guard" (dated 14-26 Jun 1948), and gift shop interior [1949?]. - Kobe scenes feature a large series of images relating to Passover celebrations (dinner, party with dancing, general scenes) with the Jewish community (including soldiers). The Kobe Steel Works is featured, including aircraft engine "graveyard", series of images creating panorama, and workers and machinery. Also includes images relating to the Korean Ethnic School "Riots" on 1 May 1948, ruined buildings [earthquake as well as bomb damage?], a theatre, and Minatogawa Shrine. - Kyoto scenes feature a series of stock tourist images, many of which are hand-coloured as well as Rothschild's own photographs. These include Nijo Castle, Kiyomizudera Temple, the Golden Pavilion at Kinkaku-ji, and Heian Shrine. Also includes photographs of Amita damascene jewellery workshop (including workers). - Mount Fuji photographs feature a tourist set of hand-coloured images of the mountain from a number of vantage points. Also contains images of the interior of Fujiya Inn [Fujiya Hotel?], including the reception area. - Tokyo photographs feature buildings and tourist sites. These include the Imperial Palace, Imperial Hotel, Ginza street scenes, Nippon Theatre, Assembly Hall, Meiji Shrine, Union Jack Club (interior and exterior), Tokyo Railway Station, General Headquarters building, Akasaka Palace, and Tsukiji Hongan-Ji Temple. Images also include a series of images of the Empire Day Parade on 24 May 1948. These include the Australian Band, 3rd Battalion marching, visitors [dignitaries?], and Air Vice Marshal Cecil Arthur Bouchier and [Colonel Foster?]. - Yamaguchi scenes include Freyburg Baths, Yamaguchi Girls High School, and series of images of men on the street titled 'Yamaguchi "Types"' and another series showing soldiers on a recreational trip to Aio Beach. - Other images include the Ofuna Kannon and Himeji Train Station, woodcut illustrations of Japanese women captioned "Rice planting" and "a maiden in farming-dress", cherry blossoms, gardens, shrines, the breast stroke race at the 3rd Battalion swimming sports, the 3rd Battalion athletic sports (29 Jun 1948), and traditional Japanese footwear (geta and zori) on display in the street [Okoba?]. - Album contains numerous images of Rothschild. Others are identified, usually only by a first name or surname. Identified people include: soldiers Clark, West, Bailey, Williscroft, Philips, and Norris on a street, Chofu; Passover celebration photographs show numerous individuals including Schochter, Katzman, Bella, Phil, Weitzel, Iris, Bert, Angel, Hoffmann, Joe Friedman, Mr and Mrs Slutzky, Lt Rose, Ruth, Marcelle, and a man captioned '"Ambassador General" of Hungary'; two elderly Japanese women in a garden are identified as Miss Wells and Miss Nishi; three young men photographed in Kamayama Park, Yamaguchi, are captioned "My students" and are identified as Taiso Aninoto, Kofu Funijo, and Teruimasu Nisamoto; fellow soldier Ron Woods; Manfred Wengel appears in a studio portrait by Asahi Photo Studio (Yamaguchi); and Dr Kishida and his family. Also contains group portrait of YMCA Yamaguchi staff and "C" Company 3rd Battalion Royal New Zealand Regiment outside "Weir Block" as well as at a formal dinner on 3 Jul 1948. - Album also includes autographed portraits of individual performers and photographs taken during a performance by the Takarazuka Opera. Also the performance of "Myles of smiles" with performers including Norma Beattie, Marie Searle, Jeff Mack, Don Ross, and Effie William. Performance of the Nippon Philharmonic and portraits of Japanese film stars Hideko Takamine and Miki Sanjo are also included. Description: Photograph album of images taken and collected by Peter Henry Rothschild during his time in Japan serving as part of the J Force, 1947 to circa 1949. Most images are captioned, and some pages are labelled with the name of the place in which they were taken and a date, possibly the date at which Rothschild arrived in the location. There are several photographs of Rothschild, alone or in group photographs. Photographs include pictures of Japanese people, buildings, street scenes, shrines, landscape views, soldiers' quarters, soldiers relaxing, 3rd Battalion camp in Yamaguchi, C Company 3rd Battalion at Christmas dinner at Yamaguchi, Japanese New Year celebrations, and a tea ceremony. Includes scenes from travel to Japan - packing up at Papakura Camp; Suva, Fiji; and on board the 'Dunera', including a 'crossing the line' ceremony. Images of Chofu from 1947 include pictures of the 'great fire' of October 1947 and aftermath (the fire destroyed over 700 buildings). Images from Kogushi, where Rothschild was with A Company 2nd Battalion, include views of the men's quarters and a view of the camp from the sea. Aio Beach (Yamaguchi Prefecture) images include photographs taken to make a "progression panorama" of the beach and surrounding landscape. Many photographs taken in Kobe feature members of the Kobe Jewish community and other servicemen celebrating Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. There are also several commercial black and white and coloured prints of buildings in Kobe. There are also commercial photographs of Osaka Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle, and Brigade Headquarters at Chofu. Other places featured are Osaka, Yamada, Mikimoto Pearl Farm, the Kiwi Club at Yuda, Iwashimizu Hachimangū Shrine in Yamada, Kawana Hotel (a leave centre for the British Commonwealth Occupation Force), and Ōta. Labour feign being blackmailed by the Greens so they appear to have a reason to call an early election. The Queen of England is surrounded by the mess following her Jubilee party, but remains amused. Comment on the New Zealand couple who denied their baby medical care with the result the baby died. The couple are drawn in the style of NZ Gothic. Bill English hears that 1 in 4 National Party supporters are considering voting for Labour to keep the Greens out of the next Government. Shows Helen Clark undermining Trevor Mallard to the press over his handling of the Teachers pay negotiations. Helen Clark is advised that calling an early election without good reason will do her no harm. The leaders of National, ACT, Greens and NZ First whine about Helen Clark calling an early election when her popularity is high. Bill English takes heart in the news that the favourite teams for the Soccer World Cup have been eliminated from the competitions. He sees this as a sign for his hopes in the 2002 elections. Jim Anderton launches his new Political party the 'Jim Anderton's Progressive Coalition Party'. A teacher schools his class on how they can help escalate pressure on the government over teacher salaries and conditions. Winston Peters stirs from the political wilderness to address an audience of 500 trapped elderly people. Jim Anderton wears a jester's hat (pretend Alliance member) and regrets having to take it off. Around him are other hats of political parties he has belonged to or is about to belong to. The Greens outline their policy on GE organisms and cannabis. There is an obvious disparity in their requirement for safety between the two substances. Comment on the lack of support for signing the Kyoto Protocol on Global Warming. Helen Clark seeks to rule as a majority government. The minor parties all agree that she can't. Shows public being notified of the closing of the Wellington Evening Post and the merger of the Evening Post with the Dominion. President Bush outlines his plans for a Middle East peace. Description: Views of Manila, Hong Kong and Japan; some hand tinted Views include street scenes, music halls, and musicians. There is a sequence taken in a porcelain factory showing the clay room, potters, decorating, modelling, kilns and the factory showroom. One long sequence shows the Toshugu Mausoleum, burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) which was built about 1630s, including a view of the stable of the sacred white pony. Inserted in the front of the album is a slip telling about the ceremonies associated with "Boys's day" and the flying of balloon carp, which is the theme shown on the front cover of the album. Inscriptions: Album page - "To my wife, whose solicitude suggested and whose business capacity rendered it possible, these memories of a never to be forgotten trip are affectionately dedicated. Thomas Pringle. 1900" Thomas Pringle, a photographer employed by the Government Tourist Department, visited Japan in 1900 and recorded his impressions in an extensive photo essay.
