Description: Shows Yasser Arafat of the PLO and Menachem Begin, former Prime Minister of Israel, standing in a boxing ring. Their hands both raised in triumph over a well beaten man representing Beirut, who is lying on the ground. The cartoon refers to the ongoing war between the PLO, Israel and Lebanon. Description: Album of photographs taken and collected by Godfrey William Aydon during his service in World War II, circa 1941 to 1945. Album compiled by Aydon's daughter Liz in the 1970s. Some prints have Aydon's writing on the back and these descriptions have been transcribed for album captions. Locations have been identified for most other prints. Photographers of commercial prints are unidentified. Album is divided into sections titled "People", "Cairo", "Alexandria", Jerusalem", "Nazareth", and "Beiriut". With the exception of the "People" section, the photographs are mainly from commercial tourist sets. Identified military personnel are Aydon, Russel Kirkby, Alex Inkster, Ross, Jack, and Goff. In some images some men hold or stand by guns. Other photographs relating to military life include the interior of Aydon's tent, the interior of the mess tent, and unidentified men in uniform on a doorstep holding two geese. Local people also feature, including unidentified men laying bricks and a man identified as "George", the Greek proprietor of George's Bar, who is pictured outside his establishment with a group of soldiers. The "People" section of the album includes a group portrait of soldiers in front of barracks at Trentham Army Camp taken by S. C. Smith. Images of cities and towns that Aydon visited include scenic images, cityscapes, and famous sites. Images of note include the Nile River in flood, millet fields, Cairo Citadel, Jerusalem War Cemetery and Memorial, and a number of churches and mosques. Also includes labels from Regal and Stella Light beer bottles (both made in Cairo, Egypt). Educated at St Alexander's Catholic school, Bootle, Liverpool, until 14 years old. Describes first jobs as butcher's boy, grocer boy, laundry and ship galley boy. Details voyage to New Zealand, jumping ship in Wellington and getting work at Lane Walker Rudkin in Christchurch. Says he gave himself up and spent two weeks in Paparua prison on remand and that Harvey Rudkin supported him in court case with shipping company. Talks about working at Exide Batteries, Taylors Drycleaners and Public Works Department at Staveley. Says went to Methven to make concrete pipes for Surrey Hills. Describes volunteering for World War Two service at 17 years old, telling them he was 21. Describes training at Trentham in 1940, and going on 'New Amsterdam' to Sydney in 1941 with the 5th Reinforcements. Details trip to Port Tewfik, Egypt via Ceylon on board the 'Aquitania'. Describes training with mines at Maadi Camp, and being assigned to 13th Railway Construction Company. Talks about going to Mersa Matruh and El Alamein. Says he was chainman to Charlie Ensor from North Canterbury. Details his role and railway construction, use of Indian labourers, sand storms and getting bombed and strafing. Talks about working for ten months in Beruit and Syria, helping South Africans put in a tunnel by the sea front. Mentions contact with the Vichy army. Says division went to Bari, Italy and disbanded, and he was allotted to 7th Field Engineers. Describes work as mine sweeper during Cassino campaign. Refers to first job at Scissors Bridge, being held up at Rimini, and being taken prisoner overnight with 8th field engineers and 23rd Battalion. Expands on horrifying experience of Monte Cassino, minnie whopper shells, dead bodies, dry rations and V for Victory cigarettes. Description: Album of photographs probably taken by Corporal Stuart McLean when he was with the 2NZEF in the Middle East, 1941-1942. Photographs include everyday life, monuments and ancient sites in Beirut, Baalbek, Homs (now Hims), Aleppo (now Halab), and parts of Syria. Scenes associated with the various campaigns in the Middle East and North Africa, include one of Nissen huts in Syria, machine gunners and sweeping for landmines in the Western desert, captured enemy guns, the wreck of a Messerschmitt Bf 109 (ME 109), some of the 74,000 prisoners taken at El Alamein, and parades and medal presentation (seen from a distance) after the North African Campaign. Description: Photograph album compiled by Gunner W E Jones who served with 29 Battery, 6th Field Regiment, 1940-1945. Images include damaged tanks as well as vehicles in the desert. Jones appears to have got hold of captured film as some 1941 images from Bardia show NZ/British prisoners under German guard as well as Panzers. Other images from Tunisia and Bardia show German graves, a German half track captured by 28th Maori Battalion, a shot down German plane and pilot and also Jones and his battery.
