By: Belliard, Jean-Baptiste, 1771?-; Delpech, Francois Seraphin, 1778-1825
Reference: A-039-009
Description: Head and shoulders frontal portrait of Pacific explorer Bougainville. He wears a wig, a jacket with patterned braiding and a pleated ruche at his neck Dating: Bougainville's Pacific exploration was when he was in his 30s and early 40s, but he appears older in this portrait, possibly in his 60s or early 70s. The artist Jean-Baptiste Belliard was working in Paris from 1791, and the lithographer Delpech, born in 1778 was unlikely to have been carrying out his trade much before 1795. A date after 1795 and before Bougainville's death in 1811, aged 82, seems likely Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Lithograph 254 x 203 mm
