General Assembly Library :Album commemorating the inauguration of New Delhi, and the un...

Date: 1931

By: New Zealand. General Assembly Library

Reference: PA1-f-235

Description: On the 10th of February 1931, the city of New Delhi was inaugurated as the imperial capital of British India. In the forecourts of the two secretariat buildings were erected four columns donated by the Dominions of Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. This album is an official commemoration of the inauguration of the city and the unveiling of the columns As well as New Delhi there are photographs of Delhi, its principle monuments and historical buildings, and of the people's fete held at the Delhi Fort as part of the celebrations. The decision to relocate the capital of British India from Calcutta to Delhi was announced in 1911 during the Coronation Durbar of King George the Fifth which was held in Delhi. In 1912 a planning committee was formed. This committee chose Edwin Lutyens as the principle architect, and Lutyens invited his friend Herbert Baker to join him in the enterprise. Lutyens was responsable for the plan of the the city. His most notable contribution to its architecture was the Viceroy's House and its gardens (now the residence of the President of the Republic of India). Today this building is considered one of the architectural masterpieces of the 20th century. Baker, who had built the Union Buildings at Pretoria, South Africa, was responsable for the buildings of the Secretariat, and the circular Council House (now the seat of the Indian Parliament). The city was constructed by Indian master builders and craftsmen and Indian labourers over a period of 20 years. (Info from "Splendours of the Raj," Philip Davies, John Murray, London, 1985) Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
