Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Photographs of Rose Olive Langton, her sister Violet May Langton, and future husband Gordon Adams, and others, at Camp Creek on Lindis River, 23 September 1933. The photographs show panning for gold, and washing clothes, as well as a posed group portrait in the miners' camp (see Historical Notes). Included together with the photographs are captions describing the people in the scene and what they are doing. Source of title - Title supplied by Library During the depression of the 1930s, the New Zealand government subsidised unemployed workers who were willing to mine for gold in the hostile climate of the Lindis Pass area. Comprises a range of subjects taken around Ashburton and the inland Canterbury area to Timaru on the east coast, as well parts of Otago and Southland. The photographs mainly consist of landscapes, natural features, and scenic views, although a few buildings and structures are included. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. The last slide showing the Lindis Pass was taken by Neville Hatwell. This sheet shows parts of Christchurch including the Cathedral, Cathedral Square, the Avon River and the statue of Robert Falcon Scott; the Rakaia River; a signpost on the road to Mount Cook; Lake Pukaki; Mount Sefton from the road; the Hermitage hotel; views of Mount Cook from the Hermitage; a group of people looking up the glaciers in the Tasman valley; a mountain daisy and a Mount Cook lily; and the Lindis Pass. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: Interview with Wilf Broughton born 1918 in Rotherham, England. Describes immigrating to New Zealand with his parents when he was 8 years old and growing up during the Depression in Auckland and Christchurch. Talks about his education at Richmond Primary School and his university studies in chemistry. Discusses his various experiences of bicycle trips throughout New Zealand. Describes in detail a 1935 trip over the 'Five Passes' (Porters, Arthurs, Haast, Lindis and Burkes) with other cyclists Graeme Milne and John A. Sanderson. Mentions various highlights of this trip including the towns and people they met, difficulties in crossing rivers and the food they ate. Talks about other trips around South Island to places such as Hanmer, Lewis Pass, Westport, Karamea, Cauldervale, Heaphy Track, Nelson, Picton, Grove Track, Blenheim and Kaikoura. Mentions that he had never heard of anyone previous to him cycling the Heaphy Track. Recalls cycling trips he did when he was working in a munitions factory in Melbourne during World War Two. Including trips to Julong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Ulyangs, Albury, Mount Kosciusko and Canberra. Describes the clothing and bicycles used during these adventures. After the War he returned to New Zealand and kept cycling. Met his wife on a cycling trip to the Milford Sound when the Homer Tunnel was partially complete. Discusses various experiences of cycling tours with his wife in North and South Island. Recalls his last cycling tour and how he took up tramping instead.
