Wānaka, township on shore of Lake Wānaka, was formerly known as Roys Bay, and then for a time as Pembroke (possibly from 1863 when John Connell surveyed the townships of Wakefield, Pembroke (Wanaka), Newcastle (Albert Town) and Gladstone) until the name was changed to Wanaka in 1940.
