Description: View looking up a shallow stream towards a rocky bush-clad gorge and distant hills. Two dying beech trees flank the stream. Probably shows the upper reaches of the Waipara River See Acland, L.G.D. The Early Canterbury Runs, p. 280-283 for further information about Horsely Down Inscriptions: Title and date from mount, detached and discarded. Inscribed on back on discarded frame: "South Waipara was southern boundary of Horsley Doyon and Malbrook Lance (i.e. Horsely Down, owned by Mallock and Lance), painted by Capt E. F. Temple 1894." Description: Shows a map of the coastline with the following labelled rivers emptying into the sea: Hurunui, Te Kawa, Waipara, Te Kohai (two branches), Akaaka, Rakahuri, Kaiapoi, Kawari, Korotuaheka, W[ai]makariri, Puhererekanui, Otaroro [the Avon River, fed by] Wairarapa, Waimaru, Rakipawa. The Estuary is described as Opawa. Also shows Waiau, Motunau Island, Port Cooper, Port Levy (spelt Levi) and Pigeon Bay. A track is marked along the beach from Hurunui River mouth to Te Kawa, with short sea voyages noting approximate mileage to Waipara, Kaiapoi, with the pa indicated, Waimakariri, the Estuary, and Port Cooper.
