Description: Shows 'Touai' (Tuai) at left in European dress with bayonet, and 'Chongui' (Hongi Hika) in Maori dress with a long staff or club at right. Danvin has copied this image from de Sainson's original work entitled "Shonguy.Touai" in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde..." Paris, 1834. vol.2, opp. p.371 (qRare 910.8 DUM Voya). Sainson has in turn copied his image from Jules Louis Lejeune's "Naturels de la Nouvelle Zelande" - originals done 1824, and copied for publication 1826 - see ATL copies at C-082-096/097. From a French edition of Domeny di Rienzi's "Oceanie" not held by the Library; ATL's copies have title of work in either 2 or 3 languages beneath the image, whereas this work has title in French only. The book was reissued several times between its original publication in 1836-37 and 1872. ATL has 1863 edition at 919 DOM. Duperrey's ship, the "Coquille" visited New Zealand in April 1824. Tuai slept on board several times. Hongi was offered the chance to sleep on board, but refused. (See: "New Zealand seen by the French" (1991) page 18.) Description: Shows 3 Maori on slope overlooking Paroa bay, huts to the left in middle ground. There is a large tree-fern in the left foreground and hills across the bay in the background. The 3 Maori are all men and all have the topknot hairstyle. A small boat with a sail, probably from Dumont D'Urville's ship the Astrolabe, is pulled up at the shore and several people are visible around it and on board. Korokoro was the chief of the Paroa Bay Maori and died in 1823. Description: View from the water of a Maori canoe with fifteen Maori on board. Two men are rowing and two other people are holding oars; one a man in European clothes (Tuai) standing near the prow of the waka on the left, the other a woman with a child strapped to her back, standing at the stern on the right. In the background across the water is the steep site of Kahuwera Pa, on the southern shore of the Bay of Islands. Kahuwera Pa was viewed by Duperrey and his crew on 9 April 1824 Based on a watercolour drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1824 visit to the Bay of Islands. The original drawing has the same number of people aboard, but differently arranged. The details of the canoe are quite different. There are many more buildings shown at Kahouwera Pa in the original than in the copy. The original drawing is in the Bibliotheque du Service Historique de la Marine, Vincennes, Paris. The Library has a photograph, neg 75610 1/2. The title of the original is Habitants de la N.lle Zelande, avec une vue de leur place fortifiee ou Hippah - 10 avril 1824. Chazal's copy was prepared for the aquatint illustration with the title Pirogue des habitants de la Nouvelle Zealande, plate 45, to Duperrey's Voyage autour du monde ... (Paris, 1826). The Library has a copy of the aquatint, uncoloured, at C-082-099. Tuai is identifiable from other named Lejeune drawings of him during this visit. Other Titles - New Zealand. Inhabitants and canoe.
