Description: Outward correspondence to his family in England. The first letter and half of the second were written from Nelson, the remainder from Kakaramea in the Taranaki Province where Petch initially bought land but was ultimately forced to sell at a loss. The letters, scattered with anecdotes of local interest, give a very full impression of early colonial life in a fast growing settlement, still under the influence of uncertain Maori-Pakeha relations, with emphasis on domestic, agricultural and economic establishment Quantity: 3 folder(s). 0.03 Linear Metres. Description: Comprises three letters written by John Dutton Powdrell and two by Samuel Dutton Powdrell sent to their family in 1858, 1859, and 1879. Letters written in 1858 and 1859 describe the Powdrell brothers' travel in Hawke's Bay, farming practices at Te Aute, as well as related activities (building houses, pig hunting, domestic tasks). Letters also discuss the quality of land at Ahuriri, the brothers' resources and income, raupō houses, and James Williams' house and farm. Also contain news about Samuel Morgan, James and Samuel Williams, and requests for news from England. Letters written in 1879 are from John Dutton Powdrell in Kakaramea and discuss the death of his son, Arthur. The two letters written by Samuel Dutton Powdrell are sent from either one location with alternate spellings or two locations named "Tapuaeharinui" and "Tapaeharuru". Quantity: 1 folder(s).
